Engine Head Problems

I have an old tractor with an air-cooled Wis-Con engine. The Aluminum head melted and I now have a ½” valley from the piston chamber to the outside. I ordered a new head and gasket, which is on the way, but I have a question on why or how this may have happened. I do not want to melt the new head. Recently the engine has been stalling when a load is placed on it. I then have to stop what I was doing (it has a front-end loader on it and I am moving dirt) and wait for the engine to return to full throttle. The engine goes from a near stalled state and surges to running at full throttle. Could this have caused my problem? Also any ideas on how to stop the stalling when a load is placed on the engine? I have replaced several parts, readjusted the governor rod on the engine and cleaned the carburetor a bit. I was thinking that I may need to rebuild the carburetor but I would rather do this as a last resort. Thanks for any info.

Your engine is probably running way too lean under a heavy load. If you are doing heavy work you will have to adjust the load mixture screw to richen up the carb(turn it out). You could also have a partially clogged carb causing the lean mixture.Make sure you have a good flow of gas to the carb. Also make sure the timing is correct and you are using the correct heat range plug. Another thing you might try is running mid grade or premium gas in it while you are working it. hard.
