Off topic farmhouse question

I have some water stained wood floors from leaky radiators, even after sanding.

My farmhouse is 210 years old and I want to restore all the floors one by one over the next couple years. I have been on a number of house restoration sites and they all say "It's simple to fix water stains, first buy my book..."

Anyone have experience with this problem?

Thanks in advance, I really like this board.

Mark,
We had a similar situation on our house. We bleached the water spot under the radiator, but then had a hard line where the bleach stopped. Bleached the entire floor, then applied a stain to the floor to get rid of the stark white bleached look before putting down the poly. It got rid of MOST of the stain. It is now very presentable but not perfect.

Mark, MarkB's comments are to the point. Oxalic acid can bleach a lot of stains on wood. However, if you would like more detail, check out this woodworking forum on the WOOD magazine site.

There are various concoctions that will bleach wood. Most contain oxalic acid. How well they work depends on how bad the wood is stained and the species of wood. You might try just plain oxalic acid from your hardware store. It comes in crystal form, you dissolve the crystals in water. If that doesn't do it, you can try one of the more potent mixtures used for cleaning wood decks or teak. (You find teak cleaners at a marine hardware store.)

Can't help you with your question but try posting it on the "Country Talk" forum here at the YT site. There are a ton of people there that probably could give you some good advice. I think it's here lower down on the forum menu.
