Odd problem. I have a JD 750 tractor and recently when I shut it down after running it for several hours, Smoke poured out of the voltage regulator only when the engine was off. I replaced the VR and ran the tractor again and it smoked again. I disconnected the VR and started the tractor and it ran fine. The alternator seems to run the tractor fine too. Of course with the VR disconnected, the battery runs dead. Does anyone know why the VR would smoke after I shut the tractor down? and does anyone know if I will damage the tractor by running it with the VR disconnected ( Jump start)?

ANOTHER thing you might check.. Some of those alternators require juice from the ignition switch to create a field in the alternator to charge. It is possible that someone has run a direct wire to the alternator for the initiating electricity, and it could be located on another switch or hooked directly to the battery. THIS IS ASSUMING YOU REALLY HAVE AN ALTERNATOR AND NOT A GENERATOR. Generators don't require electricity to begin charging.

take alternator in for testing it can charge good but be shorted out and cause current drain back thru the regulator get it tested first see what is going on also check all wiring for fraying or a bare wire that is touching some where.
