We were not in the blackout area, I just wondered how others adjusted to the dark.

I was in the Bruce A nuclear power plants when all the class 3&4 lights all went off . Bruce B tripped the turbines, opened the steam release valves and went on poison prevent. We all looked at each other..... ..... Called the wife who was in the Pickering nuclear plant and she just seen the Shift Superintendent and a couple of 1st operators run down the main hallway which as also only lit with class 2 power. The stand by gas turbines where winding up,the steam turbines had tripped and steam release valves were open. Knew then the situation was huge. We had a couple of voltage spikes/dips knock our office computers off line at the Bruce at approx 3PM and 4 PM, trouble was in the works then. Darlington and Pickering lost all units for 36 to 40 hours due to Zeon poisoning because of the new stupid *ss procedures. Then afterwards it takes most of a day to start a unit from a extended shutdown. Used to trip turbines and even reactors on occasion and if the problem was known and corrected we would bring them back before the 20 window was gone. The bulk of Toronto had to wait for electrical power until after Pickering/Darlington could be restarted. The coal, gas and hydro electric plants managed to supply some essential loads with rotating blackouts once they decided the 500,000v and 230,000v grids could be re-energized. Western Ontario had better be grateful to Bruce Power, for the three out of four units they saved. We had power back on the grid by 7:00PM Thursday. I started my "pos" Coleman generator and it failed after two minutes from a grounded rotor before I even added load to it.

buickanddeere,

Good to get some stright poop from you as to what was going on at the nukes.

I spent ALONG time a work at the motors waiting for the OK to turn on the power. Finally was able to turn on some critical loads on Friday morning at 8 am (I think) but we were told that if we went above out 6 MW limit they would shut us down again. We weren't allowed to increase our load until Sat morning.

How long was your house without power? My wife was manning the house and we didn't get anything till 1 PM on Saturday. Then went throught the rotating blackouts (2 hrs on - 2 hrs off) till Sat night.

Talk to you later.

Trevor

Milked by generator Thursday night, unfortunately the generator blew just after we finished but the power came back on about 1 AM Friday and it's been on ever since. Mostly just been enjoying listening to Toronto radio and how much they're all complaining about not having AC for 12 hours. Power line maintenance has been so poor in rural areas here in Ontario that we're getting used to not having power for fairly long stretches.

Down here all we got from it was the newscasts, we had no problems here. Local utilities, Co-op and Ga.Power have been upgrading lines for about 5or 6 years. Some years ago I bought a generator, and a guy at work asked me why I wanted all the money tied up in that thing and my answer was, "call me when the lights go off and we'll discuss it then", Standby power is well worth the expense!!!

32 hours without power or water in Plymouth Township, MI. Portable generator kept food from spoiling and ran sump pump. It was a little hunorous listing to the protable radio and how the politicians in each state said the problem did not originate there but in the neighboring state or province. Who cares where it started just figure out what happened so it can be prevented. Sure makes me realize how dependent we are on utilities.

Yep, politicians dont do anything but flap their jaws at the problem. And Detroit Edison has you by the %alls. I bought a generator 5 years ago and use it about twice a year now.

Here in Eastern Ontario we were lucky. Only out 3 hours or so in the country. The cities are still rotating blackouts as of this morning. We had a big ice storm in '98 that knocked us out here for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks so everyone and their dog has a generator in these parts.
