I have a Vicon KM 240 mower/conditioner (7'-10") that's 18-19 years old. Vicon has the 3-blade disc. I will admit I did have pto shaft problems but solved that myself. Put an 80* on her. Rebuilt it 3 years ago repaced all bearings. Never have replaced any gears! This machine has really been used too, just relined the skid for the 4th time last week. If I were to buy a machine today it would be a Vicon.

Thanks for the comments. I currently have two NH Haybines,a 474 and a488. Am having trouble cutting the late hay this year due to tangles in the second growth. We had aNH disc mower a few years back but did not like it because it would shave the ground then the hay was hard to pick up with the rake or tedder.Have they changed or did I have it adjusted wrong? i would like to run a disc mower instaed of dragging an expensive haybine through this hay which is leafy second growth and may not benefit from conditioning rolls.

Not sure about NH in particular but most companies have an option to go with higher skid shoes to avoid the problem you dealt with, that's what we did with our Hesston 1340 and haven't had any problems since. It's also possible that you just had the cutterbar adjusted so it was slanting too far down.

Was it a mounted disc mower? It is easy to adjust cutting height. To leave a higher stubble, all you do is lengthen your tractor top link by a turn or two.

In 1987 we got our first disc mower and parked the sickle bar mower conditioners. I got to thinking I needed a disc conditioner about 1995. One of my neighbors told me that I would be way better off to buy a tedder and ted right after mowing instead. I didnt believe him and got the disc cond. anyway (JD 1326). He was right, much as that pains me to admit. Conditioners are ok in alfalfa but I can't get one to feed in good grass at the speed I need to cut. Roller types wrap the rollers and impeller types ball around the impeller in good timothy or orchardgrass.

I bought a Bush Hog brand that summer. Good machine for about 5 years then really started to have troubles. We were also running a NI 5408 at that time. Year before last my dad and I were cutting in the same field, him with a 5408 NI and me with a Bush Hog GHM800. I had 20 more hp and he cut circles around me. I went that day and traded my BH in on another 5408. Really like the shaft drive over the gear train drive. Got the two machines now. Still keep 1 old haybine for soybean hay (I have never had a disc mower do right in beans). This time of year, even with all the rain we have had I can cut alfalfa at noon, ted at 4, sun the next day and bale the next at noon. Had some I cut yesterday that was down to 21% moisture tonight. Conditioners are nice but for the cost of 1 I can buy 2 disc mowers and 2 tedders.

Have owned Taarup, Bushhog and John Deere disc mowers; the JD is (in my opinion) easily the best of the three, although they all worked as they should when they were new. Only disc mower conditioner I've had was a Taarup; flail/rub type; worked great, but parts were impossible to find and prices were unbelieveably high. I'm sure you know you're talking about 2 different machines; if you "need" a conditioner, a mower alone is not gonna do you much good; if you don't need a conditioner (they're much more expensive to buy and operate), then just go with the mower.

The Deere and the Kuhn are basically the same machine.( Strangely enough, there has been an article in "Farmers Weekly " about different Mo-co's and they seem to favor the Deere and Kuhn too). Both appear to to have a very good name over here. Mower conditioners are very popular in UK i.e. those with the flail type rotor. The average British farmer would not have a crimper if it came free with a bag of potato chips but that is probably due to the differences in our respective climates. At the risk of repeating myself, sickle mowers 'died a natural death' over here years ago.
