I was at a farm sale a couple weeks ago in central
ohio,they had a 4040 with 1750 original hours
that had a 148 loader. The old man bought it new,
quit farming 20 years ago and kept it around to
push snow and grade his lane. The tractor brought
$20750,the loader $3000,front weights $40 per
slab. They also sold the front weight bracket off
the tractor for $50. A local Jocky bought it all.

This is an answer to both of your post's. The 4040 is a good tractor. (If it has been well cared for) The combination of the powershift, and the loader, will make for a nice package. Here is what I'd do. Get the local John Deere dealer to pay a visit to the tractor. You'll have to pay them for an hour or two, but a good experienced mechanic COULD save you from making a mistake. Someone that has spent time working on 40 series tractors, will know just where to look for potential problems. The price sounds high. If this tractor is in "average" condition, that's WAY TOO HIGH. But, if it's had a recent overhaul, or is just in WAY ABOVE AVERAGE CONDITION, you won't get hurt too bad. You can take a worn out 4040, and spend that much getting it back up in good shape. Check the loader. Pick up a load with it. DOes it work like it's supposed to? John Deere dealers can get anything that you need, it terms of parts. They aren't cheap, but what is these days? Do you have a good dealership in your area? One thing that I would do to this tractor. Install the "kit" from Deere to filter the engine coolant. It will prevent premature engine problems. (Electrolosis. The pitting, and eventual eating through of the cylinder sleeves, do to small dirt particles in the cooling system.) Good luck, and let us know what you decide. Bill

I agree with Mike, that's way too much. Too many hours and those powershifts aren't bulletproof either.
