I have several old IH crawlers, can I use fuel from the gas station or do I need off road fuel.

The different fuels are in most cases the same stuff. Fuel pumps wear out just as quick with either one. In general most all fuels are a lot cleaner and will work just fine.

Use either one you prefer, but regardless, ALWAYS add the diesel fuel additive. Examples are Shell, APS, and other brands. They raise the cetane, add lubricity, reduce water build up, prevent rust, prevent gelling, and in general keep your tractor purring like a kitten. I use in every drop of fuel, and never worry about fuel getting old, gelling, etc.

What product do you use to get your cetane? Around here, we can only get ATF, or find an Amsoil distributor.

I use a Schaeffer additive for my customers - I tested a 43 cetane fuel on Monday, after treatment, it was 48. I used #137-ND Diesel Treat 2000. Enclosed is the link to their website.

Clear fuel is Low Sulfur, and mostly only what is sold at service stations. The pump should tell you. The dyed fuel may or may not be low sulfur, depending on your location. For example, in ND, high sulfur is still available.

It is true that when Low Sulfur was introduced 10 years ago, there was pump problems. It had to do more with the refining process than the lack of sulfur. Most of those problems have been ironed out now. The low sulfur of next year (I believe, could be a year later) will have less sulfur. The ultra low sulfur plan will be phased in until we have approx. only 2% of the sulfur that is in todays low sulfur.

If you are concerned about lubricity, try to find bio-diesel (typically soy-based additive). If not, Shaeffer's or other additive manufacturers have additives available.

I don't think you get much choice anymore. I recall some politician pushing a bill so that you have to use low sulphur diesel now. Several diesel websites claim that the low sulphur stuff has less lubricating properties than the fuel we use to use on the farm. Therefore, those old injector pumps are failing sooner. Best bet, use a diesel fuel lubricating additive, or so say the experts. JIM

I use the low sulfur so the exhaust and fuel drips/spills don't stink. Odor is faint and close to kerosene.

Presumably you are talking diesel here, not gas. You can and you don't need to. BUT, as it's all the same stuff (with a dye in the 'off road' so the tax men know if you use it in a road vehicle) you might as well use the cheaper. If you buy from the filling station, you can support your government by paying even more in taxes than you need to, if you feel that benevolent.

It's the same fuel. Off road is dyed, so the D.O.T. boys can catch farm use fuel(tractors)in pickups and semis.
