I have a new to me New Holland baler (square). It is fairly new 1998 or so . Yesteday the pick up belt broke; the local dealer did not have one nor did they really know how to put one on as their computer was down. The belt sheave is behind a timing gear set, something has to come offto get it on , seems like an awfully difficult install for just a belt . The manual even suggest removing this belt during storage but makes no mention of how .Since I had hay on the ground and rain on the way I fixed it for now with a slicing belt . Anyone been here?

Computer down doesn't matter; service info is in the service manual which is still on paper. Info may well be in the operator's manual, too. I am thinking the easiest way to install belt is to remove the REAR cast gear and knotter clutch drum. Mark gearset before removal and install in the same spot. You will have to remove some shielding and hold the knotter drive pawl in while reinstalling the gear. Check your knotter/plunger timing when done to make sure. Failure of this belt is unusual IMHO, but that doesn't help you.
