Trying to figure out what tractor manufacturers used DD power in their tractors , or that were regularly retrofitted , or targetted for conversion to DD power.
I am a DD fan , and I would like to know what models I should be looking for.

I remember the Allis Chalmers line of crawler tractors all using GM 2 cycle diesels , The smallest one the HD5 used a 2/71 then the larger models up to the HD15 used 3/71s, 4/71s and 6/71s.
The largest model the HD 20 used a GM 6/110 . All these models were of the same engine family except the 6/110 although of 2 cycle design was completely different and had virtually no common parts with the 71 series . When GM bought Euclid , Allis Chalmers went down the street from their tractor plant and bought Buda Diesel. Various models of the Budas were used in their crawler tractor line including their biggest, at that time, the HD-21. Shortly after buying Buda, Allis Chalmers re-engineered the design of the diesel, particularly the cylinder heads and called them the thousand series of diesels with models like 11000, 21000, etc.

Hi, Rob. I'm a bit late coming in on this but Euclid - now Terex - used GM diesels in pretty much all of their scrapers and 'dozers way back before they were called Detroits.

Another manufacturer who used them extensively was the Austin group, Austin Western, etc. who put them into graders and cranes amongst other things. I think Clark and Michigan were also using them for various applications.

LeTourneau, and later Wabco, also used them in a lot of different machines.

Allis Chalmers used them in many of their earlier machines and I don't know when they stopped using them and switched to Buda diesels or what the biggest machines were that they used GM's in.

All of the above were before these engines started being called Detroit Diesels but some continued after the name change.

Various GM motors were also quite popular for marine applications and a LOT of the bigger ones were used in railway loco's. The most powerful 'dozer built to date, at least that I know of, was the Western 2000 which had a 1,650 hp GM which was actually a marine version of the 16-278 engine.

Hope this helps.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

8V-71s were used in the Gehl silage cutters. What a machine for its day. ex: 2Gehls... 6 DSL trucks...5-9 mile haul...Steiger Panther 280 in the pit... @ the end of the day 80 acre of 25 ton corn was chopped, hauled, and packed. The two Gehls only stopped for lunch. They never stopped in the field, waiting for trucks. We had to hump it to keep up with them.

There is a pic of a Steiger Panther in the photo section. The one in the pit in my ex had a 12 ft dozer blade on it. John A.

I have heard it said that DD's were diesel to noise converters. It has also been stated they were the only externally lubricated engine on the market. They have a reputation of being about the easiest starting diesel there is, as well as easy and inexpensive to work on. I had an 8V71 in a semi, and it served me well.

AC used DD in several different models of crawlers back, I would guess in the 40s and 50s, from 2 or 3 cylinders to at least 6.

I beleive AGCO was/is using the 50 series in some of their larger row crop tractors. Clark also used 71's (I think) in their loaders, as well as Treefarmer and Timberjack in porters and skidders.(353, 453) DD's were widely used for many light industrial applications, until the B series Cummins came along.

John Deere put a 6-71 (6v71?) in the 8010/8020.

Must've been a beast in the late 50s when it came out.

The John Deere 440 Wheel and Crawler tractors used the 2-71 diesel, and the model 435 as well.

Close but the 435 and 440 used the 2-53, not the 2-71 or 3-53.

Glad you liked the website, thanks for the compliements. The 440 Wheel and Crawlers could have three point hitch, and I THINK the 435 could have it too.

Good luck,
Brandon

Oliver Super 99, 990. 1900 and 1950 (but not 1950T)(several of the Olivers came badged as Cockshutts, too), JD 435, AC HD5 crawler. Case LA was a popular retrofit (I think there was a kit- did dealers install?), MF 98

Oliver super 99 GM used a 3-71
Oliver 1900 and 1950 used 4-53
Allis Chalmers HD series crawlers used 2-71 to atleast 6-71. Seems I remember one model with dual 6-71 mounted side by side
Steiger used DD in the early model 4wd tractors.

Had a LA Case that was retrofitted with a 3-71
I repowered a Versatile 125 4wd with a 6-71.

I remember viewing a videocassette from Allis-Chalmers and HD 19; an after market(I believe) showed a HD 38(two HD 19, side by side).

Yupper. My HD7W has a sweet sounding detroit 3-71 in her. As soon as I find a steering clutch, she'll actually be able to use that detroit.

John Deere 440 crawler came from factory with a 2 cycle 2 cylinder DD diesel. I always thought it was a strange critter but it worked well.
