saw a very small alternator on a jd at a recent pull. about 4 inches in diameter, about 5 inches long. had a stamped metal cover over the rear with letters "ND". battery post was on the side near rear. had two connection blades in rear cover. someone said it was a one wire alt. off a toyoata (spelling) lift truck. seemed it would be great for close fitting situations. anyone have any ideas on this or other small alternators? Thanks.

Probably a Nippon Denso. You'll find them on many smaller Japanese cars. Also some Kubota tractors, JD lawn and garden with liquid cooled engines, etc. Recently I spotted one under the hood of a small Ford car (an Escort maybe?).

If you're looking for one I'd suggest a visit to your local auto wrecking yard. Denny's Carb Shop also catalogs them, but they're kinda pricey....

Veeerrrryyy pricey. Got one for my dodge van, the odd one that they had to use that year. Something like 380 Cad, for a rebuild, no core, as mine was split. The ND on the cover sounds like NipponDenso
