I am thinking about purchasing a John Deere A which ran good, but developed a slight knock. Waht could it be? I am 14 and don't know much about tractor engines. I am used to helping my uncle paint antique tractors.

Ck for loose flywheel like other post said. Sometimes if they were run loose too moch the splines wear and you cant keep them tight . If it is a rod you can take out shims as needed. I would seek your uncles advice. If he doesnt know the answer Im sure he has friends that would be glad to help. Good luck.

Have you solicited the assistance of your uncle? He may well have a wealth of experience into which you can tap, and be in a position to offer practical help when situations like this arise, along with recognising other potential pitfalls into which you might otherwise fall.

It is not uncommon for the flywheel to get a little loose, and it MUST be tightened up to stop the knock--or it will wear the splines on the crankshaft... To tighten it up, I would oil the flywheel bolts and loosten them a little....then tighten them up... My Dad always said it should take 200 lbs on the end of the wrench... ( I remember him standing on the wrench)...!! Anyway.....get them well tightened--evenly..!! The flywheel also sets the end play on the crankshaft, so check that before you re-tighten the flywheel....!! Too much end play, and you will have a knock...endplay should be somewhere around .010" (ten thousanths)

The "knock" could be anything from a loose flywheel (grab the flywheel while it's NOT running and see if you get any movement in or out), to low oil pressure (it should read in the M range if it's an original gauge, or about 20 psi if it's aftermarket, with the engine running at a fast idle), to worn rod or main bearings, which is a lot of work and money. You might also check to see that it has enough, and proper grade oil.
Sorry this isn't much to go on, but it's a start. Check oil level, then flywheel, then oil pressure. Those are the simple things to check, and fairly easy to correct. Internal engine repairs sound like they might be a bit beyond your current understanding.
Hope this helps, and good luck!
