I travel thru Texas and have seen older tractors with an extra bulge in the hood. This looks factory as all I've seen are painted and don't look like they were modified. I have only seen them from a distance while driving by. What is this bulge for?

Yes, they are LP or propane. They were installed by the dealers on just about all makes and models. My neighbor has a JD and a Oliver with them. I have seen Fords and IH as well.

That 706 is an early one like ours. We used to have two 706LPs but only have one now. Here in SE IA I'd say you could count the numbers of LP tractors in our county on your fingers and most would be IH.

Concerning the 706 L.P. that you all have, we are considering buying one and was wanting to know if they are worth the buy? The price they are wanting to sell it for is $4000.00. I have been reading about the pros and cons of them. Is there problems with the shifting of the tranny? Any comments will be helpful.

You may be seeing propane powered tractors. The fuel tanks on these tractors will look as if someone has set a propane tank under the hood and pressed the hood down over it from a distance.

Here is a pic of a 706 IH propane power tractor.

I bet what you are seeing is an L. P. gas tank. This fuel seems more common in that region.
