My grandfather has an old Ford 901 Powermaster Tractor and has just had the carb rebuilt and quite a bit of work done on it. His problem seems to be related to the fuel filter possibly. He starts it and it runs great for about 2-3 minutes and then it dies. You look at the fuel filter & it's empty. When you pull the filter off the line, after just a second the fuel starts flowing again. We reattatch it, but it will only run a few minutes before the filter is again empty & the tractor dies. Any help for the desperate?

It's a common problem on the hundred series Fords. Inside the fuel tank at the drain, there is a filter that gets clogged up after a few years. That, plus the closeness of the fuel line to the engine causes vapor lock and stops gas flow.

You can buy replacement filters at the Ford parts dealers, either local or online. You might want to check the inside of the tank for rust too. If there is a bunch, the new filter won't last long either.

I wasn't remembering exactly right. Let me clarify:

I think I remember the filter screen being a permanent item inside the tank. The fuel shutoff valve extends its pipe just inside the screen. I don't think the screen is meant to be replaced. However, mine was so crudded up that I used a long handled screwdriver to destory the screen and pull it out of the tank. Then I replaced the fuel shutoff valve. Works great now.

sound's like the fuel tank is dirty or it is vapor locking could look also at the cap or leave the cap off to se if that make and diff .if leaving the cap off work'is the vent in the cap is bad
