I wish I'd paid more attention when my my grandpa used a Ford N or my uncle a Farmall H. We bought a 100 acre dairy farm in the hilly part of Wis. with a small (25 cow)1900 barn. We found a manure spreader that fits in the alley, but are looking for what would be the best small tractor with around 30-60hp and short enough to fit under the pipeline (about 6'0" or the crease in my forehead if I don't duck). We don't have alot of money to spend on a new one, or need anything fancy. We prefer older, simpler and reliable. My husband is looking for the"big" tractor, leaning toward an IH 856,966 or 1086, but I want the second to be something the 12 year old and I can use to do mowing, spreading, plowing the-big-garden, moving calf huts, etc. The kind of thing that might have a post hole digger or bucket and be able to run the hay elevator, but also rake hay or cultivate. I'm a teacher who grew up with horse pulled equipment so I'm turning to you for advice. I hope that's the correct use of this page and apologize if it is not. thanks for your time.

I'd recommend a Ford 3000, 1970 model or later.
An excellent 39HP tractor.

You're in the right ballpark--an 8N or similar would do everything you describe, and parts are readily available. They're also lower than a Farmall C, H, etc. which sounds like a good thing for your application. I grew up on a 50-cow dairy farm (usually 25-30 milkers and a few young stock) and for many years our "big" tractors were IH 300 utilities. We finally stepped up to a JD 2240 (50 hp) and from there to a JD 5400 (60 hp, 4x4), which is plenty of tractor for anything we needed to do on 200 acres. As has been mentioned, the MF 135 is also an excellent little tractor, and there are several others that would work just fine in the $2,000--5000 ballpark.

I think your husband is looking at overkill. A 60 hp tractor will suit your needs much better. bigger isn't always better. I farm 100 acres and put up hay on 1000 more and my biggest tractor is a farmall 656. A little Allis WD gets a lot of use on light work as well as a Ferguson 20. Look at any of the smaller utility tractors. you will want 3 point hitch. The Fords and Fergusons are easy to find repairs for.

Any of the utility tractors will work, something like an I.H. 300, or 350 utility would be new enough to have live pto, live hydraulics, and a hydraulic lift hitch. Stay away from the newer compact diesels, they are pricey, and some of them are not too dependable.

Try and find a diesel Massey Ferguson 135. The 135 is a reliable little workhorse, parts are readily available and the power steering makes for easier operation.

I second that. One of the best tractors ever made.
