My battery needs to be charged, and is also low on water.

Do you add the water, and then charge?
or
Charge the battery, and then top off the water?

I work for one of the big three auto mfgr. in the lift truck repair shop of one of their assembly plants. One of my jobs is servicing the batteries in our electric fork lifts. The recommended procedure is, the electolyte should cover the plates prior to charging and topped off to the bottom of the fill hole after charging. The reason is, the electolyte expands as it heats from charging and if the battery is full cold it will bubble out. What evaporates from normal use is just water but what bubbles out is acid. Then when it is replaced with water the acid is diluted, not good for the battery.

I have a 36V battery on my forklift, the top of the battery had alot of acid build up. I cleaned it off and sprayed a terminal protector on it. When I opened the cell caps the fluid was below the plate tops and the battery needed charging. Are you saying that I should add some electrolyte and not just water? I know there is a proper way to handle these batteries and with the cost of replacements I'd like to get all the life I can out of this one. Any advise you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

And, make sure its room temp, adding chilled water to a battery thats 180degrees, under the hood, can warp the plates, and probably kill it, it was a trick of the old road side gas stations that needed to make some quick sales. Same goes for adding really warm water to a freezng battery. John in Ne.
