JD 140 won't start

My JD 140 quit on me the other day while idling. Now when I turn the key to 'start' nothing happens - sometimes I hear a single click - sometimes not. The battery is fully charged/clean contacts. If I jumper directly from the battery to the starter, it turns over but never starts. I am getting spark. Does anybody have any ideas? I ohmed a few of the saftey switches I know of and they seem to work properly.
DOES ANYONE HAVE A WIRING DIAGRAM that they could send me for this?
Also, does anyone know of a reliable source for getting a SERVICE MANUAL for the JD 140?

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

Like Ray said, check the PTO switch. What you have described has happened to my 140, and I have given the PTO switch a firm rap with a screwdriver (on the back side, under the hood). Suddenly, it will then turn over.

Let us know what you find.

Dennis

If you are getting a spark, you might look towards the fuel system.

Check out>Link

Maybe a bad ignition or PTO switch. When its cranking but not starting are you getting good fuel? Hang in there we'll get you going.

Jeff, send me an e-mail - think I can help you with the wiring diagram. Will check files out in workshop in the morning. Sounds though as if you have either a weak battery, or bad connection on some of the battery cables. If the PTO switch is on, all you'll get is a "click" too. Check to see if that switch is good - I've had a couple fail over the years!

I have a 160 that I am having the same problem with. I took the starter up to have it checked and all seems ok. I have replaced the "+" battery lead (looked bad) and the ignition switch. Checked all connections and they look ok as well. I get a click every now and then, but mostly nothing. Just went dead! HELP!
