Those of you who have a semi truck to haul your tractors around with, what kind of fuel economy do you normally get, both loaded and unloaded?

Thanks for the information.

I run a '95 Freightliner FL106 (business class) as my field service truck. It has a Series 50 Detroit and an MD 3060P Allison automatic with a 4.10 rear. It weighs in at just under 33,000 full time, and I'm getting right at 8.4 MPG out of it. Been going to job up in the mountains over the past couple months and that has dropped me back to about 7.5 MPG, but that's about it. The Allison is a 6 speed, with both 5 and 6 being overdrives, so it is great for highway cruising (around 1600rpm at 70MPH) as well as having really good pulling power in the lower gears for going off road.

As someone who has driven a semi for thirty years, I can tell you that there is not a good answer to your question with out knowing what kind of a truck it is, what is in it for an engine, tranny, axle ratio, how much weight you are pulling. You can take a late model tractor, Detroit power, 9 speed overdrive, 3.55 axle ratio, pull a 48 foot step deck trailer, put 2 M Farmalls on it, and get about 8.5 miles per gallon with no trouble, maybe even closer to 10 mpg. But if you are talking an older semi tractor, such as a IH 9670, or any other cabover of that era, with probably a 400 Cummins in it you are talking about 6 miles per gallon.

Thanks for the reply. I was interested to hear others comments. I was kind of wanting to get an idea of what other trucks get in MPG just in general. My father-in-law owns an old 60's model (not sure of the year) Dodge C-500. It is a big truck for its day with dual axles, air brakes, etc. It has a 318 V8 gas and he said it got 8 miles to the gallon...5 unloaded, 3 loaded = 8 MPG. :)

I just wondered if it would be worth it to throw a late model diesel engine in it $ wise. I wondered how it would compare to the big semi's of today. I believe it would have a 4 speed tranny with a 2 speed rearend in it but not sure. Thanks for you comments.

If it was me, I would restore the ole truck, and put a 5.9 Cummins in it, would do you a good job, and economical at the same time. As far as compare to todays semi's, it won`t, but it will do what you want to do, and probably get around 12 to 15 miles to the gallon.

We were toying with the idea of putting a diesel engine in it out of a wrecked vehicle. For what we are going to do with, take it to a few of the local tractor shows every now and then, I don't think it would be worth the few mpg more that we would get. It's a strong truck like it is with low miles. Also, I was wrong it is a CT-800 Dodge with the 413 V8 and a 15 speed transmission. (I was way off!) We probably will paint it up and leave the engine in it. Thanks for the comments.

I was on the classic truck page looking around and had seen that the truck was larger than what you first thought, so I will give you another sugestion, around here back when that truck was new there was a company that ran a fleet of them on the road, they had 903 Cummins, and 8v71Ta engines in theirs, they ran pretty good for that time era. If you do decide to repower it, I would go with an 8v92Ta Detroit engine, go ahead and put a 10 speed, or 13 speed tranny in it, which ever one that you go with, make sure that it is the overdrive tranny though, will help you on fuel economy, I figure the ole Dodge has a low speed ratio gears in the rear ends, that is why for the OD tranny.
