Need some power to my pole barn, local power is an option, but dont really want my ground dug up or poles and lines across my property.Thought about a generator but cant really justify the expence on those.hinking about solar, just need enough setup to run maybe an overhead light or two, shoplight, and battery charger for the tractors.(Its gotten to be pain to take out my batteries and bring them up to the house and charge them and take them back down and so,on and so,on.)Cant you fellers point me in the right directions for this little project?

The ideas of looking at the RV supplies are good and wind power is a good idea if you have a fiar amount of wind. Another place to look for both solar and wind generators is in the off shore crusing boat equipment. I don't know much about it but I have seen in boating magazines adds for both. I would think some solar and wind combined charging a couple of deep cycle batteries would be all you need. If you hook up the battery in your tractor or whatever you wish to charge, to the other batteries which are maintained by the solar and wind, the power levels will equalize I believe.

Bite the bullet and run 220 power underground to the barn. You will never regret it. It will supply all the power needs that you or a future owner thought they would never need.....less hassle and probably cheaper in the long run.

Aloha, maybe you could use something like this for your battery. If the lead is too short, then you could splice it and make it longer.

Sure wouldn't overcharge the battery!!!
Just about enough current to charge a 'C' size Nicad battery. Wouldn't recommend that for a tractor battery.

Aloha, This is only used as a trickle charger keeping a fully charged battery charged. They have larger one's but I wouldn't use them as a trickle charger. I have one keeping my spare battery fully charged and it hasn't failed me yet.

Howard

I have used these solar power battery chargers for years,Harbor Frieght or Northern carry them.I have 3 of them mounted on the outside of 3 different buildings, extended the leads and put clamps on the ends, just hook them up when you put the tractor in the shed and will keep battery fully charged. They are not made to charge a dead battery just keep it maintained when not in use.

Wind power might be a practical alternative. You probably get more sunlight when you don't need it and maybe not enough for those long dark evenings, whereas with wind it probably blows more in the winter when you need more power - and it don't stop when it gets dark!
Depends really on what you want, what you want to spend and what the weather is like in your location. One thing I do know is that the solar arrays and generators are a lot cheaper on your side of the pond.

Hi 49Chubber,

I use the Unisolar 64w unbreakable PV's on my RV. They work very well, about $325 eh delivered. In full sun I get 15vdc @ 4amps. Cloudy 2amps. I would not get less than a 32w PV or you won't have enough usable amps for the demand.

You will also need a charge controller, about $35/$50

Then you will need a storage battery for lites. If your not going to use the lites more than 8hrs/day then one 105amp battery deep cycle will do, about $70 at Wal-mart (yellow case battery's only). You do not want maintance free deep cycle battery's. Also pick-up #12 RV extension cord and use this for your wiring.

Next head to Camping World and buy a 12vdc flourscence lite for RV's. A dual 18" tube will lite up a good sized area, about $35 eh.

You don't need a battery AC charger as the PV will charge your tractor battery's.

Take a look at the below website for all kinds of solar parts and great info.
