Bought a used '96 Simplicity Broadmoor has a hand controlled hydrostatic transmission. It seems to freewheel down hills, then slows down when going up hills. I can compensate w/ hand control but I'm used my previous gear/belt tractor which held constant speed up and down slight hills. All around tractor seems OK but in tight hilly areas I have to drive it w/ my hand on the control. Is this normal? Thanks for any info.

I have a bx2200 Kubota and it will hold up or down hill and stop when I take foot off drive peddle. had a sears and it was same. A true hydro will not free wheel.

Thanks for all the info guys. I have started to get used to the tractor. I think I need a steering wheel knob now because I've almost always got one hand on the hydro control. I wonder if the foot controlled models work the same?

I bought a new cub-cadet in 1994. It holds back just fine on any hill. I have been on the old high wheeled case lawn mowers. So I know what you are talking about.

My dad has a Case 446. Case didn't used hydrostatic, they used hydraulic. A pump, a direction/flow valve, and a hydraulic motor on the transaxle. There is a retard setting on the lever, but if you aren't careful, the crazy thing will still try to run away downhill. Once you're aware of its idiosyncracies, though, it's a pretty good tractor.

that is normal driving with a hydro...tranny.i have owned 3.an arians,and 2 craftsmen,a 24hp,and a 25hp kohler.the hydro-static tranny is highly recomended.with the tractors i use,the only time to use the clutch is in cranking,emergency stops,and setting the parking brake.cw

That's the way I run my Cub Cadets, one hand on the wheel, one on the hydro.

Back in the early 70's we had a ford riding mower, about 12 hp, with hydrostatic, it would pick up a little speed downhill but I wouldn't call it freewheeling. It just had a single lever, the farther forward you pushed it, the faster it went. Pull back for reverse. I never had to use the brakes, the hydro drive would act as a brake.
That mower worked for years with little maintenance, and the hydro drive was never serviced and never caused a moment's problem.

I have the same with my Cub Cadet, it's the nature
of the beast. I drive with one hand on the control

Greg, I have a JD 430L&G with a hand controlled hydrostatic transmission and mine does that to some extent. It doesn't really "free wheel" downhill but it will speed up some depending on the steepness and it slows some when you turn uphill. This seems to be the nature of this type of drive. When mowing my yard I pretty much drive with one hand on the hydro lever except when out in open, level spaces. The zero turn mowers are pretty much the same way except you have to use both hands all the time. So, the deal seems to be that while the hydro drives are quite a bit faster, you have to "drive" them all the time. It seemed strange at first, but once I got use to mine I'd have a real hard time going back to a gear drive. They seem to be pretty durable also, I bought mine new in Jan. 1985, it's still trucking and has never been back to the dealer.
