What's the best grease?

Hey guys, we're working on a 71B Bucyrus Erie crane for a customer, and in tearing it down we're finding evidence that the operator has been greasing it, but that the grease just doesn't seem to be "hanging around" in the bushings like it should. Basically you can see the evidence of the grease being forced out between the bushings and the pins from greasing it as well as from operating it, but when you take them apart the inner areas don't seem to have any grease film on them at all. Now I've seen cases where the wrong grease was used, (like a customer that tried a graphite based product that was worthless and caused every new bushing we had installed to wear out in 6 months), and machines where it's painfully obvious that it isn't getting greased at all, but this is different. According to the BE lube chart, they are using the recommended grease, so that in itself isn't the problem. What they are using is a Shell Alvania 2EP grease which being an extreme pressure grease ought to be right, but still the problem. Ok, that's the problem, here's the question-- I've always heard good things about Lubrication Engineers, and have one customer that has sworn by them for over 30 years and has the results to back him, but what about the rest of ya'll. What grease do you use in your most extreeme applications and how does it hold up?
Thanks for any opinions you can offer up. Wayne

I've worked in the industrial maintenance field for almost 25 years. From drilling rigs to gas compressors. Our current company has conducted many test to find the best grease that has the least failure rate. This includes pillow block bearings, sleeve bushings, high speed brearings, PTO and clutch bearings. Mystic and LE Red both are always at the top. White Lithiums are junk, well, they don't fit our purposes even though the labels say they do. Most multipurpose grease isn't all that great although most isn't rated for High Temp and High Pressure.

Three main things that kill a bearing, Too much grease, Lack of grease, foreign particles. I had a boss that had us install new fan shaft bearings on a rig once, the bearings were greased with LE Red and the grease fittings were removed and plugged. Beleive or not, those bearings outlasted all of the others. Why, a lack of dirt from roughnecks not cleaning the grease gun or zirks was now eliminated.

In application of extreme heat, cold or pressure synthetic lubricants out perform mineral lubs. Only use a premium line like Amsoil,Mobil 1 or Purple "something". A low grade synthetic is trouble.

I dno't know what they have now, but about 35 yeas ago my brother-in-law had some dump trucks and loaders, and he use a red grease from Lubrication Engineers. We used it for everything, including front wheel bearings on the trucks. Never had a failure from lubrication or lack thereof. Would put 50,000 mi. a year on the trucks and packed wheel bearing once a year.

Find yourself a John Deere farm tractor dealer. Go there and get what they call "corn head grease". They sell it in tubes or 1 gallon buckets. This stuff is dirt and water resistant, and stays were you put it. I started using it for everything a few years ago, and will not use anything else. Amazing stuff.

You are right that corn head grease is great in the correct application, But I would never use it outside of what it was designed for. The corn head grease we buy (from a JD ag dealer) is entirely too fluid to serve as a general purpose grease.

I have used a variety of different products but now strictly use Swepco. I do not have the product list with me,but they have grease for every application you can think of.

They have general purpose, high heat, high pressure and high impact. I use it to lube the pins and bushings on my back hoe. It does an excellent job of repelling water, it is not soap based as many greases are.Water will cause soap/based grease to form an emulsion and finally wash away. You might try there web site for more information.
