Has anyone restored something using the Powder Coat painting process. I have enquired abiut it and found that it is not as expensive as I expected. I have an older Versatile 4WD that I want to restore this winter. The frame of course is very heavy- 7/16" or 1/2". The sheet metal parts are probably 1/8". I have seen powder coated items and the paint seems to be very tough. It won't scratch, chip or otherwise mark easily and seems to be quite shiny. Has anyone any experience or knowledge on this procrss and how suitable would it be here. Does it resist fading well. I think they heat the item to about 400 degrees. Does this cause any warping on thinner materials.

I had the front and rear rims coated for a JD R. I had the coater sand blast and coat. Probably cheaper than paint in the long run. Looks great also.

Give a holler to Bruce Banning on the Oliver board. He owns a business doing just this type of thing. He is located in PA.

WE use powder coating alot it well not distort the parts there are different finishs some quits shinny, we have it on equipment outside stands up well it will ship but to get it off it takes 1200 degrees or machine it off which means taking metal with it. Painting a tractor would take a big oven that might be the problem.

Hi Don

My buddies race four wheelers and they have all the painted parts on their bikes powder coated (frames, A-arms, swingarms, subframe, engine mounts). The finish is tough, but it can chip if hit with something. I think the prob with doing a versatile tractor would be the size. They would need an oven large enough to put the frame in. It would have to be a bare frame with sacrificial bolts in all tapped holes. Otherwise you will be retapping these holes afterwords to clean the coating out of the threads. All parts would have to be done individually, meaning everything has to come apart. Personally, to do the whole tractor, I think it would be more hassel than it is worth. Some smaller parts it may work better for ya, like if you sent the steps or push bumper out to get done, the powder coat would definately hold up better than paint. fwiw
