OT Farm truck quit running

My son bounced my farm truck a little too hard around the yard and came to me and said it quit on him. I went to check it out and the battery was bounced off the shelf and fell into the manifold...you guessed it, positive terminal right to the manifold. Have no idea how long it was like that or what damage has been done. Put a different battery in but there is no power with the key. It is an 83 Dodge full size with a 318 manual trans. Where do I begin? Thanks

that truck should have a large bullet conector about six inches from the pos battert terminal. It may have come partialy disconected. That is common with dodges. If I remember right there is 2 or 3 fuse links on the end of the conector towards the body . Most likely it is the cconnector as the positive post shorting should not overload the fuse links. They may have been internaly broken from the pull. Remeber to always replace them with the proper gauge link and lenghth. If you dont sooner or later it may burn if an overload happens. Like every one said- start where there is power and test from there. Good luck!

I suppose if it was running when the battery shorted out... There could have been a big current surge from the alternator to the battery which burned the fusable link in the main wire. That would account for everything being dead.
Hope you learned to keep your battery hold-down hardware hooked up from now on.

Do your headlights work?

Use a test light and trace the route of the positive battery cable to the starter or starter solenoid. Do you have power there? I have seen battery cables where the connection has been pulled loose in one of the end terminals so that it looks OK, but is broken internally. If you have voltage to the terminal stud where the + cable hooks (with the test light grounded to the engine block),this would indicate the 2 battery cables are OK.

You will need to trace where the main power to the electrical system connects to the stud where the battery cable is hooked. There is probably a wire or a FUSIBLE LINK burned off in this area.

I have had a few vehicles that had " fuseable links " that were to burn out in case something caused too much current to surge thru it . I don't know about your particlar truck. Best way is to get a test light and start checking different places.

Doc If she is dead as a stone start from the battery cables and work in. Could have melted the connection inside the end of a cable at a connector.Check the grounds first as that is the cable that was making the path that did in the other battery. Battery + touching block/ block to engine ground / engine ground to frame ground/ frame ground to battery -. Also may have ripped the wires loose at the starter connection. Good hunting!!

It would still turn over if the resistor was out, wouldn't it. I will look at that but I have no power whatsoever with the key including dash lights or anything else.

Like some others said here, there shouldn't have been any surge that would have put a big load on any of the fusible links, etc because the + battery post was touching the manifold. Likely you either have a connection that is physically broken due to the flying battery pulling on it, or the GROUND cable has a problem because there would have been a huge current flow through it when the battery hit the manifold. Some vehicles have a braided ground strap from the engine to the body/chassis which you should check also, although this likely isn't causing your problem.
