I have to vent. I hope to feel better about this after I post this note. I am new to this tractor rebuild and maintenance stuff. I bought a farm and some tractors and wouldnt you know it, something on an old Oliver Super 55 leaked badly and so I went for it. I own all of the manuals, part books, and researched for literally days before turning a wrench.

Things went well with the splitting. The clutch rebuild and seal replacement went well. Putting the split tractor together... not so good. Dad always told me, it you have to force something, its not right. I wasnt sure if I was forcing it or having difficulty sliding cleaned heavy metal on cleaned metal. I ended up doing considerable damage to the engine clutch shaft, and who knows what else to the components behind it as it sucked the tractor together with the bolt threads. Once I realized that things were not right, I panicked a bit and started to undo the bolts. I let one off completely, and then CRACK. A huge crack snapped in the center frame due to all of the torqued up pressure. Cast iron, huge, heavy and no doubt hard to get replaced.

I couldnt sleep one minute on monday night. Just so sick to my stomach knowing that this is even more now far beyond my skills and that I have done unknwown amounts of severe damage to integral components of a tractor that I really enjoy. Sick that it was avoidable if I had of not forced it or sought help.

My message is, know your limits. Take these things in stages. Get help, from really qualified people, when the stageds get tough. Dont be afraid to doubt your skills. Heavy duty mechanics is a trade that is learned, you cant just buy a manual and fix everything. (well some people can, but I am learning to hate them! :) When things go bad, take a break. Never use force. While on your break, think about if your work site has become unsafe. In a panic you can shift things and create unsafe conditions. Getting hurt doing your hobby just plain sucks.

Well I feel a bit better but not much. If anything, if anyone actually read this, think about your safety, and make sure that you dont get yourself in a situation of getting hurt. I didnt but my wife pointed out that in my stage of ---(rage/fear/dissappointment/confusion/frustration)that my rational thinking had pretty much left the shop.

Thank you

They say experience is the best teacher. If you dont make mistakes you are not learning. Just last week I forgot to tighten the drain plug on my tractor, you gessed it, it fell out while mowing. For some reason I looked at my pressure guage about the same time and saw 0 pressure. I saved the motor. The next day my tractor rolled off in a busy intercetion because I didn't check the chain binders before I left home. At 61 still making mistakes. Now get a good nights sleep tonight. stan

Hmm. Maybe I better not mention being young once and managing to destroy a brand new automatic transmission the exact same way. Same problems, lack of experience and too much cockyness. Didn't want to fit up right, but I kept cranking down the bolts. Managed to snap the bell housing, crush the main pump, and crack the front of the tranny housing and squish the torque converter. All because I didn't realize I didn't have the torque converter seated properly.

We've all "been there, done that." And, we will be joining you again at various times in the near future!

relax...it happens...pretty much anything can be fixed...the main thing is to learn from this & not repeat the same mistake...i broke a truck bellhousing back in highschool(bout 25+yrs ago)...clutch wasn't quite lined up & bud says "pull er up with the bolts"...i was 17 & in a hurry...ever since i make SURE everything is lined up...:^)...then again, you have a really good excuse to get a parts tractor now...:^)...everybody can use just one more tractor...

You only made a small error, one that is commonly done ,that is drawing the 2 halves together with threaded rods, but you were unlucky about the consequences ie the cracked casting
the only way to "fix" your head is to fix the tractor!!

Hi, Hidden Identity. Well, you stuffed up. Who among us has NOT done that and more than once? All it really proves is that you are human. If you learned from the episode, you are a wiser human than many.

Don't beat yourself to death over it. More better you resolve to be more careful next time. At the same time, may I suggest that you don't let this ONE-OFF experience sour you against trying to expand your skills base in the future. After all, where would the human race be if everybody who had ever made a stuff-up had deciced never to try anything new ever again?

Happy farming and repairing.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Don't beat yourself up so badly. That's been done more times than you'd believe. Sure it hurts the wallet most times, but, everything's repairable.

Yeah I hear yuh. I screwed up (desstroyed) the clutch on a Dexta ($500 Canadian plus tax) bolting the 2 sides of the tractor together, couldn't kick my own @rse hard enough but now I've got about another beer's worth of storytelling out of the experience. Like the other fella said we've all broke more than we've fixed. Live 'n learn. Good luck and keep pluggin' away

Quit beating up on yourself. I'd bet you're pretty darn good at things some of us may or may not be able to do (you bought a farm--didn't ya?) Get a helper (even if you have to pay for it), do a damage asessment, and start all over. Just think, when you get done, you'll not only have your favorite tractor purring again, but you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you goofed up, but fixed it. Its only money, and if you really like the old tractor, then its well worth it. Good Luck...

I have been told it is a good thing there are so many different mistakes to make so that we don't need to make any of the same ones twice.

Good judgement comes from experience, unfortunatly, most experiences come as a result of bad judgement.

We all have a lot of "experience", most of it is obtained the hard way.

Let it go, We have all been there if were are honest. If you don't make any mistakes you are not learning. Books aren't always answer either. Just like last night I was building hitch for baler to put accumulator on. Had all cutout, welded it together went to put it on guess what welded it together all backwards!!.

I've attended the school of hard knocks all my life. one thing about the lessons taught there, you never forget them. HAR!

You have to learn to laugh at yourself and go on.

Now, that cast iron CAN be welded, so don't dispare. I was at a tractor show once and this man had an old huge JD 2 cyl. diesel...help me fellers, I forget the model....that he had found in a junkyard. Junked because the block was cracked and nothing else. He had it welded.....and it was obvious, and the tractor ran great. Now, if a diesel engine block can stay together welded, your torque tube/bellhousing is no sweat.

Aw heck, we've all been there did that. I haven't met the collector/repairman yet who hasn't buggered something up along the way. As long as your smart enough to split the tractor without dropping it on your foot, you're a step ahead of the game. Sorry about your tractor and hard feelings, but the next one will go smoother. Now I'm older than dirt, but once I was really strong and it took me awhile to learn a bigger wrench or bigger hammer didn't always do the trick.

I don't know about that--I've spent LOTS of money over the years buying experience!! It cost me $100 to learn that a 0.002" undersize O-ring will not seal a hydraulic valve body, $50 to learn that there's a reason a Jeep transfer case won't slip back together without tightening the bolts, $400 in emergency room bills to learn to double-check that the "boy scout fire starter" you're using is a motor oil/diesel mix, not a motor oil/gas mix, etc. etc. etc! There's an old saying that a fool does not learn from his mistakes, a smart man learns from his mistakes, and a wise man learns from the mistakes of others. Hopefully threads like this one will move us all along the road to wisdom.

Maybe this'll make ya feel a little better..... ...

Friend of mine undertook the same job you are talking about, but on a 4430 JD. When they "forced" it back together, pushed thrust bearings in back of engine. Cranked it up, and spun a bearing. Now have to do complete engine rebuild.

Worst part of it is, that tractor has a hydraulic clutch. Clutch wasn't worn at all. RELIEF VALVE STICKING OPEN!

As my dad has told me MANY times..... ...." You have bought yourself some experience!"

Well the project was not a total loss because you learned something, although it does sound like quite an expensive lesson, everybody that mechanics has done something like this I remember back in '91 I messed up a $1000 injection pump from then on if I didn't know I found someone who did.
