Tractor Oil, transmission question

I have a 1963 Masser Ferguson 50 (gas engine) and I have a very basic question.

Is the reservoir for the transmission oil separate from the reservoir for the engine oil, or is there only one reservoir and the oil is shared?

I don't see a dipstick for transmission oil.

Can you point out where it is filled if same/separate and what weight oil to use for the transmission if separate.

Also, how long should go between oil changes. How often should it be lubed.

SOrry for the dumb questions - first tractor and still learning.

You can get the manuals here on this site or from the dealer or other sites. Do a search for tractor manuals on Google etc. Rlach was telling you not to use the top link to pull with. Many too many deaths from trying to pull a tree stump etc with the top link. The tractor will pull back over quick and flip. Not good.

Chuck,
They are separates, the clutch housing separates the engine and tranny; the dipstick should be on right side behind brake pedals. Engine oil should be changed at every 100 hours, some will say 200 hrs, it is your decision(200 hours at 50 mph is equivalent to 10000 miles for an automobile, who change oil at ...); for the tranny, I use Hytran(or equivalent ;years ago they recommended SAE 90) and 1000 hours life is a minimum, again your decision and related to dirty appearance of oil; if there is remote hyd, oil gets dirty more rapidly. If no remotes, oil level should be constant height. Add grease once every 20 hrs at all grease fittings(small quantity, but more often); change oil in the air filter every 10 hours, or more frequently if working in dust conditions. Also there is a sediment bowl for gas, clean it frequently when engine is cold, by the way, the glass is fragile; dont forget to clean the radiator(outside) and never add water from a sluice to a radiator. Finally, use draw bar to work safely, not the third point on the 3-point hitch; a tractor is ... a tractor, not a formule-1.
MF-50 is a very fine tractor, have fun.

A couple of follow-up questions

1. Where do I get the 3 manuals you refer to. I have an I&T Shop Manual and it is not thorough enough - and not enough pictures.

2. What is the draw bar you refer to?

Thanks for the info on fluid, changes, etc.

Chuck

They are separate. Engine oil for engine and "tractor oil" for hyd/trans. Get the Operators Manual and Shop Repair Manual and Parts Manual. I think your tractor originally used mineral oil for trans MF 1003 ? But you should contact your local dealer and ask. I believe it would take Permatran III.
