In replacing my 420 crankshaft I messed up the timing. In the service manual they talk about a special tool that you insert in the distrubuter
hole and align with markings on the flywheel with #1 piston a TDC.I do not have this special tool.Does anyone have another way to time without this special tool? Also should the points be closed when the plug fires? Thanks

Hi, don't worry about the pionts. To get the timing in the ball park, the conductor end of the rotor should be pointing at number one cylinder plug wire contact in the distributor cap when number one cylinder is TDC. Rotate the engine until number 2 cylinder is TDC and the rotor should be pionting at number 2 cylinder plug wire contact. There are only 2 cylinders so can't go to far wrong. Once this cousre adjustment is performed then points can be adjusted and timing light used to fine tune timing. I can't remember if 420 had timing marks on fan pulley, but seem to remember inspection hole in bell housing to view flywheel. Dad would set points with feeler guage and fine tune timing by ear. It has been 34 years since we had a 420.
