I have a Wisconsin single cylinder engine,I believe it is 10 HP It starts great when it is cold but it starts difficult when hot, it has a float type carbeurator on it. Any suggestions?

I've heard storied from a good number of farmers who had Wisconsin engines on equipment, don't expect 'em to start hot. Many of them said that they'd leave the engine running over lunch breaks, etc., and that if you had to stop it to fix something, you could expect that the work would be done for the day. This doesn't really help your problem, but just brings up the point that Wisconsin engines do not start easily when they are hot.

Somebody in the archives said to mill the head for this problem. I believe 0.10.

That is what Wisconsin engines do.My first experience with them was in the early 60s, and they had that reputation then, and have continued it ever since. If they die hot, let them cool and they will re-start. Otherwise, you can crank until it's time to go home and do something else. Maybe its a cheesy blockage in the carburator that disintegrates upon cooldown. Could have been instigated by some brewmeisters that thought it was appropriate to take a two hour break to enjoy a few cold ones!

We had a neighbor with a V-4 on a baler and a combine. He swore by putting a pint of 30W in every 5 gallons of gas (leaded). Worth a shot?

I hear gas line antifreeze helps in the same way - dern it if I don't forget every time I run the swather.... That thing, if it dies, I might as well walk away for 2 hours. Needs to cool.

This last year it started dying out when it gets hot (over 85 degrees) and no breeze - so I believe the magneto could use some attention as well, Starts & runs like a top for an hour, but if the temp goes up, it goes off. This is a seperate issue from the normal (doesn't start when hot) deal.

If shutting off the gas cures the problem, then just shut off the engine by shutting off the gas all the time. That is how I shut off my tractor that has a magneto. It also will give a short cooling off period, because at that time, you have probably disengaged the load it was running.

By all means verify the igniton system. But my experience with the the older Wisconsins, especially the V-4, is that the heat boils the gasoline in the carburetor bowl when the engine is stopped and this floods the engine. Lots of black smoke when the engine starts again if still warm. I know of no cure, but a test would be to get the engine hot, shut off the fuel and let the engine run the carburetor dry. Then turn the fuel back on and immediately crank the engine. If it starts better, the hot carburetor probably is the cause.

I would look for weak spark from mag coil breaking down due to the heat. Earl

Hi Kraig,

Don't know what to do about your problem but here is a little story of my experience with 4 cy. Wisc. engines. My dad and our neighbor on the farm when I was gorwing up both had Model 69 Minneapolis Moline combines with hand crank 4 Cy. Wisc. engines. Ours would start good MOST of the time. If you sluged the combine and choked the engine you would want to restart it ASAP so it would be easer to start, but we always stoped it for dinner, lunch etc. and always started ok. Now the neighbors was another story! When he started his in the morning, he never stoped it untill finished for the day. If he choked it, he would have to take the belt off the pulley and belt it to the tractor to get it started which was no easy job! He tried everything he could think of and never could get it to start good when hot! I don't know what the difference was between the two engines but I was glad ours started ok, (which ment two of us to start it, one to crank and the other to work the choke.) Just my experience with Wisconsin engines...Ken
