I'm having trouble with the right angle drive gear box on my Ariens mower deck throwing out grease. The manufacture recomends using their moly based multi purpose grease but since there is no longer a dealer near by I've been using MF lithium base multi purpose grease. I've replaced the seal twice as well as the input shaft. There is no vent that I can see on the gear box. Any ideas? I already asked on the garden tractor board.

I agree with both of the guys below. Use the Moly grease it is a better grease. But don't worry about the manufactureers grease, just go to an industrial supply house (i.e. Acklands Grainger) and take the infor from the manufacturers grease. As you said though it is just a multi purpose grease.

Now as for Howards comment, CLean out the old grease! You might have got away with using a diiferent manufacturers moly grease but now you have mixed lithium in there. you should try to clean all the grease out of the gear box and re pack it with new moly.

hope this helps.

P.S. search for info on molybdenum and lithium greases on the web and you will understand the differences better.

Aloha, I would use the moly grease but be sure to clean out the old grease completely which ever grease you use. Mixing greases causes trouble.

Ditto, Howard.
I seem to remember reading something years ago that stated the mixing of the two greases in question would 'lead to seal failure' or to that effect. The same was said about changing an engine or driveline components from mineral-based to synthetic when the latter first became common. :-)

Aloha, if your engine is leaking some oil now using regular oil and if you changed to synthetic oil, then it will leak more. One other thing to be concerned about too,is not to over fill with grease.

My very uninformed opinion about this is that the molybdenum grease is the better of the two.

Drill a hole in the top of the gearbox 1/8 inch dia. near the back of the cover. some of the old ones didn't have a vent hole.
