Anyone running the ethanol blended gas? I tried a tank of it last week in my Suburban and the mileage went from 14 down to 9. Did I get a bad batch or is this normal? If this is normal, I donīt see much incentive to run it.

Generally, my mileage decreases 10% with ethanol.
I have kept track of each gas purchase I have made for many years.

The other day I was visiting with a mechanic about this, his comment was that he would be more concerned about vapor lock when using the blend.

As far as the BTU thing, yes ethanol has far less BTU's based on what I have read.

Now, hear is the real kicker, I own farm ground, and of course if ethanol becomes more widely used, I will benefit financially.

There are alot of better options for decreasing our dependence on foreign oil, unfortunately most folks aren't even slightly interested in this issue.

You have other problems, I always use the ethanol blend, and seems that everything I have actually runs better on ethanol. This includes my 1940s tractors.

Just drove my 87 Buick LeSabre with 320,000 miles from Iowa to New York and back to pick up another 87 Buick LeSabre with only 104,000 unsalted miles. The old 87 has used ethanol whenever possible and has never had the injectors cleaned. On the way back, the new 87 averaged 33 mpg and the old 87 averaged 30 mpg, both traveling at 65 mph on the interstate. I've had good results using ethanol.

I've been using ethenol in everything I own and never had any problems, except when I put it in an old tractor tank. You want to wait with cleaning the carb or use a good filter for a while till the tank and lines clean out. I use it in my riding mower also and no problems. If I'm on the road and can't get it, I don't see any differece in mileage. Here in SD it's also cheaper than regular and It helps the farmers corn market rather than the Arabs.

Ethanol and methanol has 1/2 the BTU as the same weight of gasoline

Years ago, some gas staions, including the 'Fleet farm' ones, put up no methanol signs. Methanol (not the same as ethanol) did a nice job of cleaning out the gunk from your gas tanks, and thus clogged the fuel system, and created problems. ETHANOL does not do that, burns cleaner, and replaces deicer in the winter, so USE it, and help reduce this country's dependence on foreign oil. What is the true cost of fuel, when you consider the cost of this country's military presence around the world? )What is the value of our soldier's lives?). WE (US) can supply this country with it's fuel needs with ethanol and biodiesel, without wasting American lives in foreign oil fields. The answer is in OUR farm fields!

Ethanol DOES cause the gunk in the fuel tank to exit and clog the fuel system. I've seen it happen (and cleaned up after).

As for the rest of your post, I'm staying neutral. I've heard reasonable arguments on both sides of the issue.

Hold on, methanol has less energy than ethanol, you are way wrong on that!

(Grumbles the farmer, who's had to fight these stereo-types for years... :)

There is a bit less energy in ethanol than straight gas, but it also helps keep your fuel system clean, the air cleaner, adds oxygen to the combustion as well as a different more stable explosion.

It's normal for the milage to drop a bit, but very little.

It's possible if you have a lot of miles on your vehicle & never ran ethanol or a can of cleaner every now & then that this tankful flushed out all the gum & varnish & plugged up your filter/ injectors.

Here in Minnesota, been running the 10% ethanol blend for many years. It's been mandated. Works fine. Really less problems this way than 'straight' gas. Only a few have problems that had dirty fuel systems to start with. Kind of a bogus 'problem', since previous dirty fuel is getting cleaned out of your system - not the ethanol's fault!

I run 10% blend all the time and I can't tell the difference. In fact I think here in Mn all the gas has to be blended.
