I've gotten the bug to get an old tractor to help mow my 4 acres, and am looking for suggestions. I got the bug when I had a chance to bid on a MF 20 Industrial early this year (I didn't get it), but I'd researched the MF 135 family, and decided that that's about what I'd like to get.
My question is--what other vintage tractors are about equivalent to the MF 135? I've seen good prices on Ford 9n/8n's, but I'm not to familiar with them yet. I've seen something on the YT site that said that they don't have 3-point hitches, but every photo I've seen sure looks like they do. What's the story?
Anyway, I'd appreciate any helpful comments and suggestions from anyone out there.
Thanks in advance.

The MF 135 is a wonderful little tractor, and (reading this forum ) I get the impression it is well loved both sides of the Atlantic!

The MF 35 is a great choice IF it has the two stage clutch for live pto, even better if it has Perkins diesel and P.S. Another good choice is an Oliver S55 or 550, independent PTO, 3 pt hitch and live hydraulics are standerd, P.S. is a plus. Theese will run a belly mower, rear mount finish mower, blade the driveway, etc. I would personally use a Farmal Cub with 59 inch Woods belly mower for mowing, a front blade for the driveway, 1 bottom plow and 6' drag disk for garden. Fast hitch would be nice not necessary

Steve: The MF135 is an excellent tractor--however, I'm wondering how you're defining "mow". Is your 4 acres lawn, brush, hayfield, or a combination? This can have a big impact on what tractor and implement combination you will want. Specifically, if it's lawn or close, you could go to something like a Farmall letter-series tractor (my personal favorites--I own a Cub and an A) or any one of a number of tractors that work well with a belly mower. If you need a brush hog, you'll be better served with something with live PTO and hydraulics, which will point you toward a "newer" tractor--60's and up.

The 3pt hitch and Ferguson System were the main selling points of the 8N/9N and they all had them.
It is redundant to say "8N with 3 Point hitch"
If you are looking for a mowing tractor be sure that the PTO has been updated to 1 3/8 spline and use an over-running clutch. The MF 135D is one sweet little tractor and would be my choice if I could find one. Ed

A Ford 660 or 860 would be comparable to the MF. The old Ford N series were niffty deals when they came out, but they are lacking in many features. They have 3-point, but the hydraulics are not live so you can't have the clutch pushed in to move the arms, and the pto & hyd are kinda linked together making it a challenge to operate. In there day, they had all these new features in a small neat package. But, each feature got a lot of improvements over the years...

Hey Paul
those 800 series Fords DO Have live Hydraulics. I have farmed with many of these tractors. Most did not have live PTO. I have an 860 with live pto
