Kurt:

I own a Polaris 300 Explorer and my best friend has the 300 Arctic Cat. Both 4x4, (AC is newer by 2 years), they are completely different machines. Explorer is quicker (2 stroke) and faster as well as true automatic. Maybe a little easier to ride for fun...

The AC is a little slower, but doesn't lack for power, and with his snow blade, I have finish graded my entire yard (2 acres) following the house lift and new basement. It also worked incredibly well for filling and grading where trench work was done for phone lines, water, etc.

The Polaris doesn't work so well for pulling (harrowing) heavy stuff, but the AC is not as easy to handle at higher speeds. Wish I could afford both, as I could really put them both to good use. Just depends on what you want the unit to do...my opinion only.

i just wanted to add a few more things; arctic cat atv's are made in the U.S.A. my arctic cat 300 has 5 gears.it also has 3 ranges. hi- normal riding range. lo- for towing heavy loads. super lo- for riding on loose rock and other loose surfaces. total-15 gears.

I own a Yamaha 660 Grizzly.

Which essentially is a small Jeep.

IN ATV's, there are two designations.

Sport Quad, and Utility Quad.

Sport quads are top end, performance machines.
Utility Quads are for off roading, technical
trail, and work use machines.

My Yamaha is 4wd, 4whl independant suspension.
With 27in tires on it, I can go places my Jeep couldnt go.

I like technical trail riding, not banzaing around
too fast on trails. My avg speed is probably 7mph. The accidents I see are people going
too fast. A crowd of riders seems to prefer how fast they can run a trail.

Now there is another contigent of riders that wish to see how fast, or how they can jump,
or how long they can wheelie. I'll hold my
comments on this particular group, but suffice
to say the term donor cycle also comes to mind... :)

Most atv have good and bad points. Depending upon use. Big heavy, 4x4, are good for pulling, heavy work. Smaller, lighter, quicker, are more fun if you like spirited riding. The 1 artic cat i rode was 500cc, heavy and rode that way. But not underpowered. Personally i like a midle weight, such as my honda 350 rancher 4x4. But my 250cc polaris will run away from it in a drag race. I think the bigger atvs are overkill unless you like the heavy type of handling.

A friend of mine owned one and he was not impressed, he recently traded it for a Honda 450 ES. I don't know about the under power thing but he said that it steered heavy and handle poorly. Maybe I can get him to post a message and he can tell you his feelings.

I would suggest that you stay with the 3 or 4 popular brands. I own a Yamaha and my father owns a Suzuki and they are both good machines.

I have been looking for a new 4 wheeler and the 400cc Artic Cat looks to be the one. They are powered by Suzuki engines. There is a very good site that can answer many of your questions on all makes of ATv. www.atvnation.com

Kurt: I have only ridden one, and it was a few years ago--I've forgotten the model. Actually, "forgettable" pretty much sums up the entire machine. It was underpowered and rode terribly compared to my Polaris. Around here (Northern NY) you see very, very few of them, and with nearly every family around owning at least 1 ATV, that says volumes about them. It's not due to lack of dealers, but just due to the fact that the ones I have seen have been no match in any major category (speed, power, comfort or dependability) for the 3 major brands. I own an Arctic Cat snowmobile (94 EXT 580) but I wouldn't own one of their ATV's.

You won't like my opinion. I'm a pilot for an Air Ambulence service. Here we call them "organ donor mobiles". Not just Artic cat, all 4wheelers.

It's the rider silly, not the machine...

You can do stupid things with a bicycle.
