Just wondering what the laws are for the use, when to use and how to travel on roads?I see so many traveling a major hiway next to center line, tractors and Amish buggys, with speeds at 55+ there could be trouble. At 5pm the yuppie commuters are in a hurry to get home.

In Texas we can move farm equipment 24/7/365 as long as it has an SMV and lights for night driving, that's for anywhere except an interstate hiway.

We can drive cattle along hiways too. Vehicles traveling either direction must yield ROW to the animals, and if you live along a hiway and don't want cows in the yard it's the land owners job to fence cattle out.

For many of the topics that are discussed on these boards, there may be as many opinions as there are people and a lot of it is just that: OPINION. I'm generally amused at the hand-wringers and nay-sayers for many of the questions asked; BUT, for SMVs, I would definitely suggest you check the laws for your area; wrongful use, accidents, and even deaths can cause you major legal problems.

definitely check your state laws. you might also want to check your local and county laws if you live near a large city.

here in illinois, you must clearly display the smv sign on the rear of any agricultural equipment for daytime operation on roads. at night you must also have the proper lighting. not sure what the proper lighting is here in illinois but my 1940 Farmall A doesnt have lights anyway.

well, in virginia,,,,(i always use that qualifing statement) driving automobiles on highways is a privilege while using them for agriculure is a right. bicycles have more right to the state roads than automobiles. i know 99% of the people don't realize this and know one day it will change. so in virginia at least if the sm object has a smv and agriculural and you hit it at 55 there is trouble and its the fast moving vehicle that in it.

The laws are unclear,I guess you can go down the normal lane of traffic with horse and buggy or a small tractor as long that you have SMV sign, but they can travel better on the shoulder than I can when I come on them unexpectedly.

Every state has different laws, but generally mounted between 2 & 6' high, visibale (doesn't mean it has to be on the very last part, but totally visable!) and use on. Always if you are going under 30 mph. It's actually illegal to use one if you are going faster...

Nightime you also need proper lighting, which is usually 1 rear red light, front head lights. There are getting to be more laws about reflectors & such, on equipment built after such & such a year.

Really best to check your local state laws for the real scoop.

As far as driving down the lane goes, I used to road farm around Chicago suburbs. Man, I'm here to tell you, you had better stay on the pavement 'til you get a place to park for a few minuts. If you give them "nuts" 2 inches of room, they'll try to pass you-run you into thew ditch and the oncoming traffic too! I learned early to "hog" my side of the road "til it was safe for me to pull over-and safe for everyone else too. I don't have to tell you boys how tough it is to hit the ditch in road gear, with no suspension, you got all you can do to stay in the seat!

Probably posting to late for most to read this ,but I saw a newsstory a coupla weeks ago and60 some % of drivers surveyed had absolutley no idea of what those triangles meant. The story went on to state that a small percentage actually thought that they were a hex sign or some kind of religous symbol that the Amish affixed to their buggies.

So why are farmers so worried about drivers in a hurry on the roads these days?

Like the other person said, if you are in a lane you need to take the _whole_ lane, or folks will assume they can squeeze through that 2' of space you give them at 65 mph. (I tried to stay to the right just to give them some visability on when to pass, but that is just an invitation to blow on by & not look at traffic at all.)
