Hello All, Just wondering what everybody does for a living. Well, right now I am working construction, but, hope to go to either truck driving school or heavy equipment operator school. What do you all do?

Husband, Daddy to two boys and Industrial Designer for a Very Large Tractor Company a few hours South of Chicago. ;O) Moved here from Atlanta where I had my own web/multimedia development business, but no spare time.

Hobby farm about 15 acres with an 8N, 30 chickens, seven cats, three cows and two hamsters. May one day finish remodeling the house, building the WWI fighter plane replica and restoring the '62 Beetle. Really good at starting projects (don't ask about finishing them).

I farm our family farm which has been in the family since 1881. We have raised four children and none of them wanted to farm, so it is my wife and I raising hogs, beef cattle, corn, soybeans, oats, and hay. I also do contract snow plowing and road grading for the township. I am active in the Le Sueur County Pioneer Power show, near Le Sueur, Mn.

Always been in the construction business: concrete, excavating-CardinalExcavating, Chicago burbs. Always wanted to farm and road farmed around the area in the mid 70's, til everything got built on! Always loved airplanes and tractors. Owned two Pitts Specials(bi-planes) built the 2nd one myself and flew it in aerobatic compititions(was ILL state unlimited champion in '93 & '94), but lost my medical, so now I got 4 Olivers '44-70, '48-70, '52-77 & '66-770 trying to get the whole 70 line. Also taught flying part time, and aerobatic lessons. 2 kides are grown, 4 grandkids are great, finally got rid of that mean ol' lady I had that never would move to a farm....so far-so good, good luck to you'all

I am a tobacco company sales rep. Have 3 years and 10 months to go before I can "play in the country yard" during the week. Maybe even dangle my feet in Chaney Creek if I want to. Farm life is in my blood, love the smell of fresh plowed ground and a love to see and make a field of baled hay. My kids want nothing to do with it. Love to deer hunt and stay at my lil camp in the country. Wish my father was still alive and will be sad when my uncle is gone - he's gettin old. They too were country boys at heart.

Interesting posting! I'm a biologist, teach horticulture part-time at local junior college. Was raised on a small cattle ranch in CA central Valley, worked in ag through college. Married to a veterinarian, which pays the big bills. Have 27 ac, mostly in forest, setting up a sawmill to saw my own, raise lots of fruits and vegetables. Use my '59 IH T-340 for brushing, grading, dragging logs, discing. Not sure what I'd retire to, unless I get disabled somehow. No complaints.

President/CEO of a very small credit union in Provo, Utah. That means I make all the big decisions.....I also mow the lawn, vacuum the floor, and clean the restroom. I'm the only full time employee.

At home (Heber City) I have a couple of acres that I cut with a Ford 850 and JD#9 sickle. Then I rake it with a Ferguson DEO 25 and bale it with a MF 124. Maybe by the end of summer I'll bale it with a Ford 542 just to prove I could make that old blue baler go!

I also keep my neighbor's acre cut. I sell the hay to my sister who has horses and llamas. Last week a guy paid me $30 to cut his 1/2 acre of grass, so now I guess I'm a professional!

I'm a scientist at a government lab. My area is digital image analysis and optical systems. Down the home stretch...could hang it up any day now...just need a little better economy, and/or the right provocation. :)

Hobby farmer with about 3-1/2 acres of pasture grass, but only a cat and lots of birds, bunnies, gophers and ground squirrels to enjoy it with us.

Getting close to ready to hay for the first time - soon as my equipment is all working. MF35 diesel (great tractor), NI-30 sickle (the hangup at the moment...needs more fixin), Ford 503 rake, and JD 214WS baler - nice rainbow of colors there! Bush hogged last night, and it was thick enough that there's enough drying today to maybe practice raking tonight or tomorrow...may even try the baler - just for practice.

Accountant for a construction company. Grew up on a 2000+ acre farm in Northeast Kansas with 12 brothers and sisters. Vowed never to be involved in farming after my father lost the entire place back in '85 and later died in '86. I now do play farm on 80 acres with two farmalls, wife and two small sons. Never made a dime farming and don't plan on it either.

Worked as a loan officer for the Farm Credit System for 15 years- then got a wild hair and went to law school, after ag pretty much dried up in this area. Worked for a firm in Seattle for a couple years after I got my ticket, but it didn't take much of that to do me. Now I'm a solo practitioner in a town of 8,000 folks near where I grew up- doing the kind of stuff that suits me (real estate, transactions, some bankruptcies). No divorces, no criminal, no personal injury. Play with tractors on the side- mostly orphans (Oliver, Moline, Cockshutt).

I work for a technical assistance agency that does planning work for small city governments. We work with communities that have populations under 3,000-most of those that I work with are under 500. (Generally, cities with populations of greater than 3,000 have a planning department while the smaller ones do not.) We work primarily in the water and sewer area, although we do other types of planning work as well. I've been in this line of work since I quit teaching (after 15 years) in '78. Love old tractors - BIL & I have more than 20, mostly Case & IH. Just a word of caution-I'm sure that OLDTRACTORITIS IS CONTAGIOUS, all of our sons (4 total) have the it, too. When not at work enjoy tinkering with old tractors/trucks/machinery. Do not have much land yet but working on it. Help my neighbor out with his property. You might wonder how it can be related to fixing up old tractors, but I'm an assistant director of food and nutrition services at a major hospital in Atlanta. Trained as a chef also. We produce food for 4 local hospitals. My wife and I buy and sell stuff on Ebay also for a little extra income to purchase those endless tractor parts.

My father was the last of many generations of farmers, and his father built and operated steam traction engines and did threshing and lumber milling for the local farmers. I guess I've inherited a little of his DNA.

Now I just build and maintain power substations (53 of them) for 4 Rural Electric Coops. Chinese proverb. "Pick a job you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life." That's me.

Made it possible for generations of kids to worship that flickering image in the corner, starting with black and white era and on through the evolution since then. Secretary for Mid Mich Old Gas Tractor Assn. Write a little prose and poetry for the common man. Hi, Folks. 5 years on wheat/sheep farms after I left school at age 15, then 38 years (so far) operating almost all types of earth-moving heavy equipment and some time on mobile cranes. I've spent a bit of time repairing the beasts too.

Still at it -- still enjoy it.

There's an awful big range of skills, abilities and experience hiding away in this little corner of the 'net, huh?

You all have a wonderful day. Best wishes.

I could not help bur respond to your message. As a Police Officer, working in the Fairport Police Dept outside Rochester, New York, in the US for 21 years, and just getting a MF 202 Work bull w/ loader and mf 200 backhoe. The tractor is in good shape, but does leak oil around the oil filter? The front end could use some weight when I use the backhoe? This is the first Massey for me, I did order a service manual but it has not arrived yet. So I may need assistance with my toy! As far as a place for the Massey I have five acres in the hills west of Keuka Lake where I have a cabin, that I am finishing and a pond that leaks and needs fixing. Thanks for any help John

I grew up in San Diego county on my Dad'd farm. I didn't realize how good it was, until it was all gone. Dad passed away about 11 years ago. We managed to keep the tractors, and about 4 acers. I started a mowing and discing business. I do most of my work for fire prevention. This is only about 4 mo. out of the year. I also work for the Unisys computor co. nights. I have been with them over 30 years. So this time of the year I only get 5-6 hrs sleep a night, and even less when I turn on my computor, so good night for now. Stan

Paper Pusher - IT Manager for global 3rd Party Logistics Provider (3PL). If you see it on the store shelf most likely we moved it or stored it. 3PL's provide contract management of inventory and distribution for most consumer and raw manufacturing goods. We got bought out 2yrs. ago and has been very bumpy ride since.

Me and my team are responsible for computer operations, helpdesk and system security. On-call 24x7x365. Been here 10 yrs. Prior to that was Dept. of Defense Beltway Bandit (Engineering) for Naval Aviation as contractor and as govt. employee. Not to bad for a hick from N. Idaho.

Other than that attempting to make my tractors earn their keep via U-Pick operation and general tractor work. Not getting rich but it is excellent therapy!! Love plowing the best.

Raised on a Dairy until I joined the army in '69. Dreamed of owning and running a 100+ head of milk cows. In the early 70's that dream became impossible. Moved to Houston area and got into the oil industry. Worked in refining for 23 years. Changed employer in '97. Last 6 years, office work in deepwater exploration and production (3/4 mile deep and deeper Gulf of Mexico waters). Time right now is not good for employees in any area of oil. For the last month, searching for my next job. Getting laid off in late August. Restoration of my 3 tractors take up a lot of my "to burn" money. Cutting back until better days. God has a plan and I know it will be good again. Just have to keep the faith. --JPM

I teach high school (ag mechanics and co-op) and farm. Farmed full time for several years but for the last 9 (for some strange reason spouse wants me to have health ins. ??). Was a County Agent for 4 years right out of college.

When I was farming full time I had a cow calf operation with my dad, did custom hay work, and fed out cull cows. Now with teaching it suits the hay business better, keep 50 momma cows for the hay that gets wet and pasture board some mares. Cut about 40 acres of timothy and about that of alfalfa plus a couple of hundred acres of grass hay for round bales.

I'm a carpenter. Self employed.
I remodel bathrooms for people. Build some new.
A few kitchens too, but mostly Lots and lots of bathrooms.
I don't advertise. Folks just seem to find me.
I rip them out, plumb them right, rewire them, rock them, mud them up and then tile them.
I work alone. Not much room in there for a crew.
Don't know how I found my way into that line. Maybe a crappy disposition...

If you are wiring in Minnesota you probably are a hack. STAY HOME OR GET A LICENSE.

...I've seen a lot of bad work done by licensed electricians and plumbers.
Hack jobs that I would be ashamed to call my own.
Yet the inspection sticker is still in the main breaker panel, and occupancy permits that was issued though the venting never got put out of the roof
Now there's no way I would say that all licensed contractors are hacks. But some of them are.
You don't have to be smart to be a plumber or electrician. You just need to know the code.
If I know the codes and I strive harder to do good work because I'm not licensed, at a lesser price I might add, and the customer is happy and recommends me to all his or her relatives who is to tell me I can't do what I do? You? God gave me the license to do this work. And he gave me the gifts and skills to do it well.
And he gave me the admonishment that "by the sweat of my face would I earn my daily bread."
And I work as hard as any of those who have posted here. And he gave me the promise that the "workman is due his wages."
And I'll make my sweat, and I'll take my wages
just like the next man.
And I'll not stay home when I have something to give to the world and a shoulder to put to the wheel.
I know bathrooms in their entirety.
Show me a plumber or electrician who does.

I agree even tho I was licenced I did many a job with out permits! I have seen many a job done by electricians I would fire if they worked for me. That is why I did most of my work myself. A licence dose not mean you know what you are doing. Small jobs are not like doing schools and hospitals. I have done them also and had to trouble shoot them later because of journeyman workers messing up. How many ways can you put a plug in a wall and hook it up? Not that hard of a job to figure out. If his name is on it I am sure he will do it right or he will be out of work soon. Mark H.

After being a Union and Non-Union Electrician for around 35 years there hasn't been one shop I have worked for that hasn't done jobs with out permits. One Union shop I worked for I did most of the smaller jobs that way, so don't give me this Hack stuff! They all do a few now and then Union or not! You sound like a 2nd year aprentice with a chip on your shoulder. If you stay in the trade long enought you will meet building inspectors, electrical inspectors who don't pull them and do side work to make ends meet or fix up there own places. Oh by the way Cops speed to in there privet cars if you did not know that. Maybe you can get another cop to give them a ticket. Mark H.

...pretty bitter mister.
Are you unemployed union man?
There's lots of work out there for a guy that's willing to work hard and do good quality work.
But maybe you're not one of them?
Unions have done a lot for the working man. But even they can't help a bitter, angry, selfish guy.
Best of luck to you.

Smaller Jobs, faster turn around and less hassles. Plus you can do a lot of what the subs would do instead. Fewer permits and fewer problems!! Mark H.

Farm 250 acres, soybeans, ear corn, wheat, oats, several kinds of grass hay. I also buy in hay and resell (not too much, just a little) I provide horse-sitting services to a local stable when the owners run the show circuit. I also do some custom field work, like laying plastic mulch with irrigation line for a flower grower, custom baling, combining, plowing, etc. I did go to college and came back with a BA in English.
I used to work in publishing (boring), then in the office a steel mill that makes nuclear-grade pipe fittings, keeping track of Material Test Reports (stressful). So far I'm doing OK farming full-time, but the health insurance is beginning to be a hassle, and if I decide to be no longer single and have a family, I'll have to get a new strategy.

We live near Dog's Breakfast, Oklahoma and have a little 15 acre plot there in the dusty part of the state. Grow a few Pineapples and clean out manure from my neighbor's stalls occasionally for a little extra coin. Like to get back on the government poggie list but I'll never get back on there, I've used up all the angles. All in all, a pretty good life. Better'n livin' in Poland.

I am an electrical technologist and I worked for a electrical equipment manufacturer doing field service on high voltage equipment until recently when I switched jobs to become a electrical project coordinator for a automotive manufacturer. I used to work on things like transformers and switchgear from 600V to 230,000V. Now I push paper and plan work for the maintenance group as well as manage outside contracting.

I don't know bugger all about vehicle (tractor) wiring though! That stuff is crazy!! Hahaha

Retired from the Navy in 1990, have had a half-dozen jobs since then. Can't decide what I want to do when I grow up.

Up until last week, I worked in technology support for the local school system, but I got mad and quit. For now, I'm doing odd jobs, a little carpentry, a little landscaping, a little gardening, whatever. I'll likely do that until frost, then see what we see. If I have enough stashed, I may take the winter off. If not, I can always get a job at the cannery to make ends meet.

I am a forester/arborist for an electric cooperative. Also play in an acoustic bluegrass/old time country band and call square dances. The latter accounts for 5-10% of my income and keeps the tractor fund functioning.

I work for the family trucking business, help my grandad care for his small farm (40 acres, corn, beans, hay, cows, and keep his 3 tractors running). Not to mention, I have one JD 4010 I am fixing up, and one that I have been pulling with, and hope to again sometime soon.

Between all that, don't leave a lot of time for leisure, unless, you consider anything that gets me the heck out of this office darn near a vacation.
