when the Big Guy is gonna call your #. Last night we lost an elderly neighbor down the road. He was out checking his herd bull and cows. Something set the bull off. From what has been reported the bull chased Buddy to the fence then head butted him over the fence. Buddy landed breaking his neck. Lots of sad folks over at his place last night.

Words of wisdom from a 90 year old friend of mine. "I ain't ever been gored by an A.I. tecnician."

Thanks for sharing with us Shep. It's a real tragedy and we feel a great deal of sympathy for the man and his family. I learned my lesson with those son-of-a-guns when I was 16 and was chased up a rock pile by my neighbor's Holstein Bull. I think I was picking rocks for him at the time. At any rate, a couple of 10 pound rocks smashing him right between the eyes didn't do much in the earning-respect department other than making a ripe cantelope sound that echoed through the pasture, but since he couldn't climb the rock pile I was able to sneak away 30 minutes later. I was sent out there to put rocks on the pile but ended up moving half the pile about 15 feet (in the direction of the bull). Told my neighbor that I would be happy to pick his rocks, again, if he didn't mind me carrying my 30-06. That was the last time he asked me to do that and the last time I've had a problem with a bull. Funny how that works!

My grandpa got gored by a bull at two different times before. Once before and once after they built a bull pen concrete on three sides 8 foot fence on front. the 2nd time was worse 4 broken ribs arm busted and lots of cuts and bruises. My dad on that occasion taught the bull a thing or two he put the johndeere B with loader up against the bull and cement wall. He said they left the tractor spin on concrete for couple hours until stock truck arrived. they are a very dangerous animal and need to be treated with lots of respect.
For that matter beef cows can be very mean and dangerous. As a hobby farmer I have no time for mean animals. I don't mind spooky or jumpy I can deal with, but mean gets slaughter sale or bullet. It takes lots of time and care to get decent tempered animals. My thoughts and prayers are with your neighbors and family.

One of my farmer friends almost got stomped to death a few weeks ago by a Santa Gertrudis heifer who just had a calf. The calf was born out in the pasture and he and his son were bringing them in. They got almost to the house and the dog came out. That heifer turned on him and stomped all over him, then went after the son. They are both hurting units.
