I saw some posts a while back about some stuff that could be used instead of calcium chloride for ballast. It was supposed to be totally non- corrosive. I think it was called rim guard or something like that. Hopefully it would be competitive in price with calcium. Anybody have anymore info on this? Thanks.

The product is made during the processing sugar beets, in Michigan where beets are a major crop the fluid is available at at most of ag tire shops. I believe the price posted was $2.00 gal opposed to 1.50 for chloride.

Too light, what's the point? If you are after ballast, use something that weighs something.

Too toxic, if you get a leak you would have a 'reportable spill' in most states.

Too expensive - real ballast is cheaper.

Just my 2 cents worth.

A search of the archives should give you enough reading for an evening and several alternatives to chloride!

rim-guard is a registered trademark by rim-guard inc. non-corrosive to rims, biodegradable, good to -30C, non-flammable, weighs 10.7# per gallon,
OSHA approved, at least that's what their add
says. can't help you on price, my newest tractor
came with it in. has a really strange smell but seems to work like they say.

Yes, Rim-Gard is a great substitute for CaCl2-- non- corrosive, non-toxic, and almost as dense as brine.I think it cost about $1.50 per gallon. E-mail me and I'll get you a number to call. By the way I have no interest in the product; just trying to help.
