I have a Farmall M with an Ensign LPG carburator. The regulator (Ensign model W) is giving trouble. Would like to know which Impco regulator is the equivalent?

Sorry, not sure where my mind is. Getting older
and can't remember anything. The first thing to do
is add diesel fuel to the LP Gas. Make sure you
are not around any fires or something that will
ignite the LP Gas. Drain your LP filler hose. Hold
it out straight from the tank. If you let it drop
in a "U" from the tank to where you are holding
it, all the LP will not drain out as it will
vaporize to fast and "freeze off". When you pour
the diesel in the hose, the LP will thaw, create
pressure and blow the diesel out. MAKE sure the
hose is empty. Pour the LP hose full of diesel
fuel. A 15 ft. hose holds about 1 quart. Connect
the filler hose to the tractor and fill the LP
tank. The LP will push the diesel into the tractor
tank. Run the tractor on VAPOR. DO NOT run the
tractor on "liquid". Diesel fuel is heavier than
LP Gas and will lie on the bottom of the LP tank.
Running on liquid will allow the diesel fuel will
go to the vaporizer and plug it. Diesel will cut
out the oily gum in the vaporizer caused by the
"refining" process when the vaporizer breaks the
LP Gas from high pressure to low pressure. Some
people use Marvel Mystery Oil to do this. This may
solve your problems by cleaning out the vaporizer.
It is the "Lazy Mans" way of fixing it. This does
not work every time, but is worth a try.

Use an Impco E Vaporizer. I have converted 10 or
12 H & M Farmalls using this vaporizer. You have
to use the original IHC carburetor because of the
governor arm control. You do not need an idle line
on this set up. If the M has an idle line plug it.
If your LPG carburetor is bad, find a good Gas
carburetor. In the bottom of the fuel bowl is a
balance tube that goes up on an angle into the gas
bowl. You can connect the LPG fuel to this
fitting. This is called "spudding in" LP Gas. This
used to be a common practice years ago. On rare
occasions you have to adjust the length of the
tube in a gasoline carburetor to get the tractor
to run correctly. When mounting the new vaporizer,
make sure it does not rub on anything. The water
inlets are in a different position and sometimes
the water lines are routed wrong and will wear
holes in them. You will like the way your M starts
using an Impco over the Ensign. If you want to
help starting in cold weather, add the mechanical
primer to this setup. While you are at it, add a
better fuel filter. The inline "Singer" or the
"Century" replaceable filter-pad are very good
choices. DO NOT try to go cheap.

The impco regulator will not work with the ensign mixer. There is no place to hook up Idle on the impco regulator. You'll have to find another ensign regulator.
