JCB Backhoes- worth considering?

In my backhoe quest I have come across ads for a few JCB backhoes. I've never heard of this brand before. I have seen a few on local jobsites recently, but never noticed them before.

They seem to fetch a lower price than comparable machines from JD, Case, Ford, etc. from what I've seen.

Are they worth considering? I wonder about quality, ease of maintenance, parts availability, etc. I've not found anything about this company yet. Are they a new company, or did they buy some old tractor company, or what? What is the story on this comapny?

well they have some great concepts, and are realy nice to operate, i ran one a little bit once, but they are terribly unreliable and a mechanics nightmare, miles of wiring, dozens of solenoids and crazy valves. not a good machine for the do it yourself mechanic, but when they work they are a great machine i gota say

i have used a 1400 c3 on the farm for years. it was sold surplus from state use. the electrical harness was a mess where someone had tried to "fix" it. i'm sure thats why it was sold. they are large heavy machines. i have had no problems that are not shaired by other backhoes {cylinder rebuilds, chaffed hoses etc.) a set of good manuals cost me around $200. within a week or so, i had the electrical back in pretty good shape. for farm use i like the jcbs but around structures they may be too bulky to fit where the cases and jd will. the jcbs ar built just as well if not better than anything out there.

I'm in the same situation: lower panel removed with wiring exposed. Where did you get the manuals? Thanks

I would say the biggest factor as to wether to consider a JCB is what series machine are you looking at? Series 2, 3 or the E model? there is a BIG difference as to the answer required for each one. JCB is no longer a Made in England machine since they opened up down in Ga. a few years back. The other factor is dealer support. They do NOT seem to be concerned about dealer coverage in all areas of the country. I`m not saying they need a dealer in every town, but they are lacking local dealer support in a lot of large market areas around the country. That in itself would cause me to consider another brand. They do not run a higher pressure than most others as far as I know. They run abou 3,200 P.S.I. on the main relief settings. They can certainly be an electrical nightmare especially if you have 4X4X4.

What do you think of a JCB 1400B 4x4 for $12900? You seem to know JCB's pretty well. Is this a desirable model? Check out the link below.

Are 4 in 1 buckets ever an option on these? I'd sure like a 4 in 1, but a solid machine is more important.

We've always used Case backhoes. They're cheaper than Deere and more reliable. Reguardless, We dont have a JCB dealer in out area, but our plumbing contractor uses two JCB backhoes and he runs them 25 hours a day and seems to have no problems. Hope that helps you out.

I have no trouble with it being British, unless it uses Whitworth hardware or has a Lucas electrical system...

I'll keep an eye out for one. I need to do a bit of searching to see if there is a local dealer for these. Since I see them on job sites, somebody must sell them.

I rented one about 20 years ago (probably didn't have electronics to worry about) from the local DIY yard to clean a ditch about 3 feet wide a nd 300 long. It had outriggers that moved side to side and the feet went straight down. The hoe bucket was about 2' wide so the wet clay I was digging made for a big load. I had to dig it 'off the side' because the top of the ditch was too wide to straddle so I really put some strain on the old girl. No problem ....plenty of hydraulic power, no sounds of stressing steel and the weight of the machine easily counter-balanced the massive scoops I was lifting. That particular hoe is now in private hands, a local farmer owns it, and it's still going strong! Not much experience with JCB, I admit, but it was all good...my 2....:-)

Parts are harder to come by, and there are some
issues with electronics, and hydraulic
pressure (high working pressure I was told).

They are also a heavier machine.

I almost got one instead of my 580c.
But opted against for the above reasons.

You guys in the U.S.may not know it but JCB is the largest manufacturer of backhoes in the world, its a rags to riches story of Joseph Cyril Bamford, hence JCB, who started in a rented workshop after WW2 building trailers and early loaders then selling them to local farmers, there are plants around the world including a new one in georgia usa.they produce trackhoes, forklifts, wheel loaders and skidsteers also the JCB fastrac farm tractor 50 MPH with full suspension.dealers throughout the US.dont worry about the quality, made by your good friends in the UK.

I don't think anyone here meant to slight UK built machinery. We have alot of road and bridge construction going on in many parts of the US, and the makes of heavy machinery I have seen is varied to say the least. I have seen Mitsubishi, Daewoo, Komatsu, Hyundai, etc.... plastered on the sides of all sorts of heavy equipment. This is in addition to the dozen or so 'familiar' named brands. JCB is not as well known here as it is in other parts of the world.

The consensus seems to be here in England....

J.C.B. Backhoes, Telescopic handlers, wheel loaders and skidsteers YES I think 99% of all backhoes used here are J.C.B.
J.C.B. Fastrac tractors NO! I am afraid that they have earned a terrible reputation here.

JCB has been around for several years I think I can remember seeing my first one about fifteen years ago. I know of own that has been owned by some people I know and they have had it about five years in their business if it had problems they would not have put up with that long. they bought it used I believe.

Very few people in UK seem to bother with Case, Ford or anything other than JCB. JCB means "backhoe" here. But of course it isn't American so it may be that you prefer to only buy stuff made in USA.
