I have a lead on what sounds like a pretty nice 580B deisel, with 22' extendahoe, 4 in 1 bucket, engine rebuilt recently, well maintained by owner who worked at equip dealer for years. He actually has 3 and is selling one. He says they are very tight and work great. The 4 in 1 bucket sounds especially appealing, given that I need to do a fair amount of grading and stump removal. apparenlty you can do a lot of what a dozer does with this kind of bucket.

I may be able to get one for around 10k. The really nice part is that he can bring it to my place, as I have no way to haul such a beast myself.

I've heard that the early case 580's were not very robust- like they were a regular farm tractor with bucket and hoe attached and the frame was not very strong. I don't hink this one falls into that category, but I don't know.

One knowledgable guy I spoke with said that a good working backhoe that doesn't need any work is worth 10k any day. I'm at a point where I don't have time to do major repairs on a machine like this- at least right off the bat.

Opinions?

I had a 580B, it was lacking power. The seal on the torque converter went bad and it cost over $1000.00 to repair. The second time it happened I didn't want it back from the dealer and traded for a Super E 4 wheel drive. I am told it has a Cummins engine, all I know is it has much more power then the B. What ever backhoe you get it is not a bull dozer, but you can do much more with a 4 wheel drive.

Worked at a Case ag/industrial dealer 75 to early 80's. If the unit realy is solid now and you don't intend to work it to death it should serve you well. The B series was the last of the line of tractors chassis with a loader/backhoe frame bolted on. The were hard working machines but were much harder to work on from brakes to transmission to engine.

The C models and higher had a unitized frame. You could have the torque converter on the ground in 30 minutes, the trans axle on the ground in about an hour with no jacks (on a backhoe) if you had air tools. Engine work was about as easy. I always thought they were the first backhoe with a functional cab.

Best of luck if you get it. I have no experience with CASE rigs at all. My old MF does the work I need done. Since I am not making $$ with mine it suits me just fine even if it is old and has a few quirks.

If I needed it to produce income I would consider other options. Again best of luck and enjoy.

Well I have no idea of prices of backhoes so I can't help you there but I have run a 580B.

The B series is less desirable. The one we had was prone to transmission problems and the brakes would rarely work for very long.

I am surprise about the options that it has. I didn't think the 4 in 1 buckets and the extenda hoe options were available for the Bs. Remember that the B series is quite old, ask what year it is.

The 580Ds are when they were a better hoe in my opinion.

I have a 1998 Case 590k Constuction King. It's a good machine...she works really well. If you need a Backhoe and the 580 is in good shape then 10k is definately a good price, as long as it is not some old antique! Good luck...E-mail me if you have any further ques
