Hey Guys, I've got a question,my 424 runs really good until it gets thoroughly warmed up,then it starts what sounds like backfiring thru the carb.It gets to the point where it's doing it often..Anybody got any ideas?? Any help will be appreciated,I love this little tractor.

Thanks,
Tim

hey i too have a 424 and it is one of the best tractors i ever had. if nothing works above what they specified try changing the fuel pump it sounds crazy but it worked on mine when it 'farted'

Could be a bad condenser. Also check the points and rotor also the dist. cap for cracks/moisture.
I am thinking coil or condenser though.

Tim,
Let me know what you find out, I have a 424 gas which runs pretty well, but "farts" every 15 sec or so..especially under 1500 rpm...it has new points, plugs, fresh gas,and tried every carb setting known...etc--can't figure it out.
Good luck with your problem. Dave

I'm really thinking about changing the coil,I had a very similar situation on a chevy one time and it was the coil.

I have a 444 that started doing that too. It would pop and carry on like it had major problems. I comverted it to the electronic ignition, and now it starts and runs better than it has for years

Tim---Valve adjustment is part of regular mantience. Valve adjustment is easy to do, as outlayed in the operators manual. Adjust the valves and if it doesn't solve the problem, look elsewhere. It sounds like you may have an intake valve, or valves, that has NO clearance and heat will make them tighter. I would also do a complete tune-up.

It sounds like a valve that needs adjusting. Have you adjusted the valves?

sounds more like dirty points or bad coil getting hot and cutting out. I have a shop manual email me for more info if you want.

Check the compression in each cylinder. Had a 460 that took a spell of doing that a few years back. It ran so smooth & I spent SO much time on it that I didn't realize that it seriously needed an overhaul!
