I posted on here earlier about our 1941 H not wanting to start or do any thing.Well we have tried all of the suggested Ideas so far and our 41 H still won't start, but we've got it to where it sputters for a couple of seconds or so, my dad opened the points up a little bit then it started trying to come to life, but still no complete start. I feel like we are on to something, but what?, Any ideas? So far we've rebuilt the carb. checked the bolts on the new manifold and checked the distributer over. It is getting gas because gas seems to run out of carb, when trying to start. Any Advice would be appreciated. Thanks again.

believe your carb is flooded out due to float level incorrect getting too much gas causeing carb to flood when starting. Have H doing same thing have float level too high, readjust then try.

Make sure you have the right spark plugs some said the D18Y plugs would work fine in the old 4 cylinders but I found that most would never try to start on that plug found that out the hard way in the -15 windy cold. I don't say you have to use UD16's but that heat range.

I can share your frustration. Those H run at least poorly even if set up poor. I might suggests the following based upon experience:

....check the timing to see if previous owner has got it 180 off so that the firing order then needs to be off 180 also to get 1 fired correctly. I had one that ran well, did a tune up without looking closely, re wired the plugs only to fine that the order had to be changed to match the mag. setting
...the plastic bushing at the points may be cracked slightly so that it grounds out under a load thereby appearing to give some spark but not sufficent to run well

Let us know ...
Bruce

Sounds like there is a lot of gas flowing so I
would assume the cylinder walls have been washed
down of oil and your compression is reduced. Try
taking out the plugs and turning the engine over
to blow out any extra gas. Make sure the gas is
off at the tank and the plug wires are not near
the plug holes. Next squirt in a teaspoon of oil
in each cyl. and turn the engine over again to
coat the walls and increase compression. Clean
the plugs on a bench wire brush to break any glaze
and gap and reinstall. Hook up wires and turn on
gas and give it a try, better yet, pull start if
you feel safe doing that. It should fire if your
carb work is right and you have spark at points.
Good luck.

If the valves are in need of adjustment, even pulling the tractor makes it difficult to start. I'd check the valve adjustment if you haven't already.

Try this, my H didnt start due to carb problem. Spray starting fluid right in the carb and try to start, (you will need a buddy to help you do this) if the tractor runs rough then the dist. and valving in the engine is probably okay. then you have it narrowed down to the carb. Also clean off the spark plugs and put a drop of gasoline on all plugs.

Okay, I had a similar problem on a 350 that had been sitting around for awhile--I learned the hard way. When you rebuilt the carb, did you take it COMPLETELY apart and clean everything??? I missed a screw in tube(don't know the correct name) in the carb, which I could blow air through, but there were holes on the sides of a tube that were still plugged up. It had been a long time since I worked on one and haven't done many tractor carbs, so please don't laugh, but that's what I did. If I would take the hose loose from the air intake of the carb and squirt carb cleaner in there it would fire and run for a bit, after I found my f-up everything was great. Hope this might help.
