I have narrowed my new tractor choices down to a MF 231 and a Mahindra 450. Can some of you folks give me some opinions? Thank you in advance. Curt

I came oh so close to buying a JD 5105 but decided instead to save $2,000 and bought my 231S about a year ago. I know nothing about the Mahindra.

I've only put about 40 hours on it and so far so good. The hydraulics are slow but it will lift a 1200+lb round bale with little effort, thought it does get light on the front (hopefully getting weights soon). It pulls well, has plenty of torque, and does everything I ask: 6' cutter deck; 6 1/2' disc harrow (could go larger); 950lb capacity spreader and of course the hay spear. My tractor gets fairly light duty so I can't say what it would do under a hard load every day.

It can be tricky getting on and off this tractor with the gear/range shifters and pedals, but I've learned to live with it realizing this is a tractor and not a Lincoln Navigator. It is however easier to steer than my wife's Toyota RAV4.

Some like the clutch pedal, some don't, I have no prolem with it. IMHO, it may take a little more strength to operate this tractor than some but it should be no worse than most.

This is a very basic tractor that meets my needs well. Getting bang for the buck led me to the 231S.

I assume you are talking about the MF 231S. If so I had one for about a year. It was a tough little tractor - well built, strong, dependable and easy on fuel. It was also loud (Perkins engine) and uncomfortable. The transmission hump comes up high between your legs and it's like getting on and off a horse. Ok 20 years ago - not Ok now. Like Burrhead said, the clutch is a bugger too and you have to stand on the dry brakes pretty hard to stop it.

I don't have any personal knowledge about the Mahindra but I would sure look at them close for what you get for the money. As far as parts, the 231S is made in Turkey - not sure if you can depend on the Massey name to guarantee parts anymore either. Good Luck!

JT

I don't know which one is best but I know the 231 is very uncomfortable to operate and you better eat your Wheaties before you try to mash the 231's clutch..

I'll have to agree that the 450 seemed a lot more comfortable to sit on. I like everyting about the Mahindra better than the MF except the name.
From my limited knowledge the Mahindra looked like a better tractor and it is aprox. $1000 cheaper than the MF ( $11,600 vs. $12,500 for the MF 231 ) I am just worried about buying the Mahindra and being stuck for parts 10 years down the road. Seems like I read on here that Mahindra is the 4th largest tractor maker in the world. If that is true it may suggest that the parts should be available, I don't know. That's my situation--- to buy the tractor I want or the tractor I trust.

I have been waiting for a week simple tie rod end for a Ford. If it does not come in today, I think that will cause me to lose my allegiency to the well known local vendor. Seems like most anybody in the business of selling parts in this country could get the part there in a week.

Buy what you "really want", because if you don't, you'll always be sorry!! Mahindra should be around a long time, it's a growing company. Robert

My MF 245 has a clutch like that. After you use it a couple of times, you don't even notice
