I put the farmall in fourth gear and now I can't get it out of gear. It still drives fine. The clutch and PTO work fine. I'm just stuck in fourth gear.

Any recommendations?

Thanks for the help. I checked the shifter and it is working fine, the problem is deeper than that. A mechanic is going to pick up the tractor.

If you have the Torque Amplifier, see if pulling the lever back while pushing the clutch pedal allows you to shift gears. If you can shift with the TA lever back, the linkage between the clutch and TA is out of adjustment. Follow your owners manual proceedure for adjusting it.

I'm THINKING, underline thaT--That right under the bell on your shift lever, you will find a pin going crossways of the tractor. Knock this out with a punch, lift the lever out, stick a large screwdriver down in the hole and line up the one shifter that isout of line with the other two. Replace the lever and try it. After you'vr tried it, drive the pin back in. If this works, you can do the repair atyour liesure. In the meantime, make certain you shift in a straight line forward and back so that the detent doesn't pop it back into gear while you're in neutral . with the lever.

Is the shifter in neutral, but the tractor stays in 4th? Can you put it in another gear, & it all locks up (ends up being in 2 gears which won't turn)?

My 300 does that, don't know if a 340 is the same, but just take the 3 bolts out around the base of the shifter, lift it up, and get all the sliders back in a row. They are worn, and could be tightened up by building up or replacing something.

Your problem might be a bit deeper.

Sounds like the shifter lever needs some work done on it. You will have to pull the deck plate off to get to everthing I think. Worn forks, springs, ball bearings. A 50 or 60 year old tractor is getting wore out.

This is more of a story than advice. My dad passed away in 1989 and that spring we had a auction. The Saturday morning of the auction, I went to pull some hay rack loads of (good?) junk out of the machine shead for the auction and the gears hung up like you are discribing in our Farmall Super H. Well I though that I would have to leave the Super H off the auction but a friend came by and I told him what had happened and he said that was not a problem. He took the freeze plugs (for lack of an offical word) out and punched the pin out of the shifter. Took the shifter out, took the knob off the shifter rod, turned the shifter rod up side down and used it the seperate the gears, put the shifter back in with the pin and proceeded to use the tractor and it got sold that day. (It took about half an hour or less.) I still think my dad had something to do with that happening that day because I STILL regret selling that Super H. I wish I could buy it back but I can't convence the guy that bought it to sell it.
