30% dishsoap and 70% water in a spray bottle will kill them. Also, try painting a piece of plywood or similar material yellow or white, then coating it with a sticky substance like petroleum jelly. Place the trap where they congregate most, and place smaller traps where they are trying to get in. When the trap is full, just scrape them off and re apply the substance. Oh...put non toxix food grade diatomaceous earth in the cracks and crevices to prevent them from entering. (an abrasive powder made from mineral remains of single cell aquatic plants. it kills by abrading and dehydrating crawling insects. Or, try non toxic roach killer (boric acid).

We got some Tempo from our local farmers Co-op and we have not had any Box Elder Bugs all year. It also works on Ladybugs Crickets and spiders. You spray it around the outside of your house and you can safely spray it inside of the house also.

I use a powder base stuff called DEMOM XYB or XP cant rember for sure but it will kill them for 2 or 3 years before i have to spray again. Just spray it around the foundation and windows and about half an hour later there is dead boxelder bugs every where. I get this stuff at our feed store and isnt that expensive. I still have a package out in the shop I will go out to check cows in an hour and get the package and put some more info on here.

THEY NEST IN THE GROUND AROUND YOUR BUILDINGS.
SPRAY THE FOUNDATION, CRACKS, ROCKS, AND OUT ABOUT 4 TO 6 FEET. WITH MALATHION or DIAZINON
YOU MUST BE FAITHFUL WITH YOUR SPRAYING SPRING AND FALL. MOSTLY ON THE SOUTH & WEST WHERE THE SUN HITS. SOAP AND VACUMING DOESN'T WORK TO WELL.

AFTER MANY YEARS I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT. AND I THINK I FINALLY GOT RID IF THE LITTLE BASTARDS!

Don't have lady bugs this year just box alder bugs .The tree huggers claim they eliminate the cluster flies !! This may be true because since the box alder bugs showed up we no longer have any flies at all !!!!

I have the durn things also and the soap trick definitely sounds like a good idea, has to be cheaper than aerosol bug killer what I can't believe is the fact that it has been colder than billy he** all winter and I still have them invading inside every once in a while

They, like those Asian 'lady' bugs, crawl into someplace warm to overwinter. During their peak cycles, they will coat a house or barn by the thousands as they stow away in fall or come out in spring. At temps go up & down, a fair share come out into the house & just _bug_ a person. Neither are really harmful, other than stinky when crushed, and not very appealing when flying around the kitchen.

See the link.

Here in MN you just live with them a few years - they come & go in cycles. About 5 years ago they were miserably thick. Don't think I even saw one last year.

Now, those Asian 'lady' bugs (guess they only look like lady bugs) moved in 2 years ago, wonder if they will ever go away? They are thicker than the BE bugs ever were.

Man 2 years ago it was heck. We had them invading the house in the thousands as soon as it got cold.

Last year it was still bad, but not near as bad as 2 years ago.
This winter I dont see any of the at all.
Maybe they froze out? I hope so.

Boxie bugs are another story. they turn my whole shed red and black when they are out.

I've been fighting them for 20 years. When it gets warm out, they swarm the side of the house and barn by the thousands. Like George said, soap and warm/hot water in a 3-gallon sprayer works well. Dish washing liquid soap seems to work best for me and you can use it for pest control in the garden too.

The other thing you might consider is cutting down the Box Elder trees. They are a rather trashy tree with limbs that hang down and give you a pain when mowing under them.

I've been trying to eliminate them around here for 45 years - the trees that is! They grow like weeds in any place thay can where you don't cultivate. Folks who owned this place before me had a couple as trees in the yard. Now, I can't get rid of all the seedlings.

I cut some last spring and stacked the trunk logs. Got low on firewood last week and threw a couple of chunks in the stove. About fifteen minutes later limbs started shooting out the chimney.
