My neighbor asked me yesterday if i would be interested in doing hay for him next year. He has 8 acres for his horses. The last few years the guy that has did it for him has chopped first crop for himself, gave the owner 2nd, taken 3rd, and if he had time would make 4th for the owner. The owner thinks he may be getting taken. So, my question for all of you is how much to charge? He said we can do it either on shares or he will pay me to do it. what share, 50/50.Or how much a bale, is $.75 fair or to low. I really appreciate you help.

Bill, here in Illinnois where I am I charge 10$ anacre to cut and rake and 1.00$ per bale on the ground to bale. And yes.I would say your neightbor is getting taken unless he is getting all the hay he needs

Bill,

With the cost of twine, gas, breakdowns, the terrible weather we've had around here for hay the past few years, and the hard time finding anyone who will work hard, I'd say keep your day job..

I make hay for my wife's four horses and a few sheep on about 8 acres. Keep in mind horse people are alot pickier about hay than cow-folk.

Good Luck to ya!

We've been putting up our neighbors hay for 3 years on a 50/50 split. The guy that did it before us went with the same split. He passed away that's why she asked us to do it. The going rate for custon round baling around here is about $5 per bale. Just the baling. Only problem is at most farm auctions I see square bales going for $.75-$1.25 a bale and round bales hardly bring more than $5.

I pay $5.50 a bale for just baling for big round bales (1000 to 1200 lbs). I got small square twine tied baler but haven't done any custom baling thus far, just a little for myself. I would guess wire tied bale would be worth a little more than twine tied. As far as doing it on a percent basis, I would do it by each cutting, and not I get this one and you get the next. Put up a few cuttings and you will know weather you need to raise, lower, or keep your rates the same. Just shoot some sort of deal and you surely won't get totally stuck holding the bag. Unless of coarse the landlords check doesn't clear.

Do it all season for different owners. If it is crop share We do 75/25 split. I do it all small square and field is done, for 75% crop owner gets 25 %. Otherwise I am paid for each trip and customer keeps all hay. $10.50 mow/con-$5.00rake,depends om times, baled with accum and picked up 85cents to 1.00 bale. depends how far to barn. Owners hay field is done and hay put away for them. Quality is main goal. I also sell their share for them if they want to get rid of want don't need at 35cents bale marketing charge.

It would be more fair to split EACH cutting- then it automatically compensates for quality/quantity, and allows for years when you don't get the usual amount of cuttings.

around here they get $1.00 to 1.25 per bale. Thats a bale 40 to 50# mowen, raked and droped in the field. The owner must pick it up or work out some kind of deal. Hope this helps

Nice Handle. In this part of the state I do the mowing, tedding, raking and baling for the hay.If the owner wants to pay me to bale for him I get out the Lancaster Farmer and charge by their rates-round bales{800#}$12.50 ,small squares $2.25 for50#,75#-$2.80.Most of these people just want the fields mowed and get Ag assesment on their 30 Acre estate lots, some even pay for seed and fertilizer. But they don't want corn or beans planted, only hay.

Ya,I'd say your neighbor is correct on his old deal. If you are happy with a 50/50 split, then if you do not take the hay charge 1/2 of what the bale is worth for your work.

My neighbor has 40 ac clover 50/50 and they buy his half for $2.00 a bale. They told him two cutting is all you can get a year, the 3rd cutting would course some live stock to abort there fetes. But I don't know that for a fact.

A do several different splits: alfalfa or fertilized grass hay I'll do 50/50. 60/40 otherwise (60 to the guy doing the harvest). Landlords 1/2 on the ground in the field or I'll pull their wagon with their help to load their 1/2. If I can dump a bale wagon I'll put it in the barn (squares). Rolls in the field.

Square bales $1.25 per bale cut rake and bale, I'll pull his wagon, he has to shuttle wagons and pay the help or I'll run a bale wagon for $1.50 if he has a place I can dump the stack.

One of my neighbors cuts alfalfa 50/50 and then buys the landlords share for 2.50 per bale.

In N. Indiana I pay $25/acre to have hay cut and raked. Then I pay $.50 per bale for baling. The fixed cost of cut/rake remains the same so if you have thick fields the cost will be lower per bale. I have 5 acres done this way. Last year 1st cut made 275 bales, so about $262 or, close to dollar a bale. I would be more worried about them making good hay for you.

$1.00 a bale (small square) on trailer is a fair price in NE Indiana. Personally I think your neighbor is not getting the best deal he can get. The 1st cutting is always the largest. 2nd, 3rd and 4th cuttings are better quality but lower quantity.
