I am going to attempt to build a baker fan. I am by far no engineer. I am thinking of using the axle out of a truck rearend so i can change tire sizes. Now i need some input on how to attach the sails. I have some real heavy sheetmetal used to make trailer fenders and the access to all the different sized flat bar i need. Im gonna build a frame and use to pillowblock bearings to attach the axle i just havent decided how to attach the sails to the axle any help is always appreciated and if there are some close up pictures i would like them. Thanks Chris

Use the cyld. from a combine. This will give you
enough area to hold the blades. Mount a small
pulley on one end for Steamers and a larger pulley
on the other end for smaller tractors. If you want
to get "fancy" use a cyld. with a variable speed
belt. This will allow you to adjust the load to
each tractor. If you want a picture of the one I
built for the K&O Club with the dimensions let me
know.

I believe at our local show the baker fan is made from the seperating cylinder of an old combine. It would be easy to do it this way, just make a frame to stand it on. Using this provides heavy enough pillow blocks, blades can be added to the cylinder rasp bars easily, and a drive pulley could be added to where the existing pulley was. It should be easy to find an old one in a combine salvage yard that would be satisfactory. I believe that the one we use has blades about a ft wide. Good luck and keep us informed of your progress.

Go to the tractor tales group and click on 1997 steam engine show pictures and link. There is a picture of a scale model steam engine with a Baker fan that will help with construction.
