was watching the Praire Farm report, a canadian based agriculture show, on the TV this morning.

There was astory about a guy using a newer unimog truck for agriculture work, mainly post pounding, haying abd plowing. Was wondering if any one has or had one of these vehicles, new or older models and your thoughts.

I had the idea of using one for my fencing business, putting a pounder on the back and snow plowing w/ it in the winter.

Thanks

There are quite a few around here in Canada especially up north. Check out Rithcie Brothers Auctions (world Wide). There are lots on there from time to time , in Canada and foriegn. There is one for sale just down the Highway. B

If you are going to use it for agriculture you need one that has 3 point and p.t.o. the linkage will conform to existing implements so hook up should be no problem. dont buy one that is ex military and will need a lot of modification.you could ship one over, cost will be in the$2000-00 range excluding road freight in u.s.

My brother-in-law had a friend in Germany who boated one over to the east coast some years ago and drove it across Canada. Well, got at least this far (Edmonton) and somewhat north on the way to Alaska. Had some problems and the vehicle found it's way back here and is sitting in somebody's back yard locally. It's a '58 model I believe and was originally some sort of a mobile first-aid station. Somebody converted it into what you might call a motorhome. I remember it had a 5-cylinder diesel engine in it. He'd probably cut someone a fair deal on it if interested since the owner still lives in Munich. I believe it is a running unit.

I drove one in u.k. for a couple of years before I moved to the u.s.a. it was an 1100 model we had a front p.t.o. and linkage with a power harrow on it followed by a amazone power harrow drill combination on the back,on the load platform we hade a tipping hopper that was tipped back to re-fill the seed hopper on the drill, you could go a long time between fill ups of that hopper.they are a well balanced machine and on floatation tires could almost walk on water.europe is the home of the systems tractor and mercedes was an early pioneer. If you want a unimog or an mb trac there are lots available but best to get one intended for agriculture.mercedes are I think selling them in u.s.through there freightliner division.models go up to around 250-300 hp

'Mogs' can be had decomissioned from Belgium, etc., in the $6,000-$30,000 range (for the reasonable ones) delivered to the docks of your favourite East Coast port...Price depends on model, condition (usually calculated in hours on the meter), and accessories involved...

DISCLAIMER:

IMHO...They can not be beat for the money...An amazing rig that is high on my list of 'To Get' things...

I use a Unimog 406 on my farm for haying jobs,
wood chipping, running a 3-pt cement mixer and
other general farm use. It's a good machine for
many jobs and serves as an extra farm truck or
transporter since it can be drivrn at 48mph. It
cannot be matched for snowplowing with anything
I've seen or used yet. I have other tractors which I prefer to use for most jobs as the sight
lines are better. If you need to multi-task and
can only afford one machine then give the Unimog
a look.

How do they handle on the highway ? Im thinking of using it as the main vehicle, traveling over a large region. If i could go with out hauling a tractor an all the attatchments and instead only hauling the attachments I would be ahead of the game.

How well do they mate up to N.A. farm equipment like 3pth mowers, tillers ect.

still wondering.

Mogs drive just like any truck. You only use the
4wd on demand. Mogs come in all sizes with all
types of options. The larger units usually have
quicker road speeds. The model 406 like mine is
limited to 48mph, that's foot to the floor. With
any extra weight from an attachment the speed
would be reduced, which would be good from a
safety point as well. The 3-pt comes in CAT 2=3
depending on the Unimog model, universal hitch
Mine has drum brakes, but most from the late 70s
up come with 4 wheel disc brakes. Most all have
power steering. New ones have air ride seats, air
assist shifting, etc. Your only limited by your
pocketbook. If you want the name of a Unimog
dealer email me. Keep in mind for the US importing
the Mog has to be 25 years old for on road use.
Newer models can come in for offroad or farm use.

Friend of mine bought one at an auction. We all thought he was nuts. That winter we had two storms back to back, snow everywhere on top of a days freezing rain. Watched him side drag a jack-knifed semi out of the ditch and back onto the interstate. He was 150 ft off road through snow in corn stubble. Never slipped a tire. Guess he's not so nuts.
Mercedes builds a good truck. Lots of attachments available from blades and blowers to backhoes and loaders. Parts available, too.
Some military unimogs available from Switzerland, being imported through Arkansas, I think.
Search "unimog" on net, lots of sites.
I want one. Bill C.

I have no personal experience with them but have only heard good things. There is a fellow from Mass. who posts here at times who calls himself Unimog. Knows a lot about them. You might try to look him up in Tractor Town if you haven't already.
