I need a gas tank sealant for the old JD B. It's got a few pin holes and I DON'T want to by a new one. I have the tank off the tractor and cleaned and dried. What sealants have you used and have had good luck with? Would it be better to take the tank to a radiator shop and let them do the work? Your opinions PLEASE.

for old gas tanks, i'd use KREM (cream) it is a 3 step process. basicly muratic acid, to eat the rust, you mix it with hot water. then wash the inside out with dry gas. after doing that letting it dry alittle on the inside. you use the KREM coating. roll the tank around coating every noock and cranny, and repeating the coating process about 3 times. Gas tank will never rust again and there is no none chemical that will eat away at the KREM, so once its in there..its there for good....maybe able to pick it up at Motor Cycle shops...

I thank you all for your opinions and suggestions. I think I will try to get some of the POR-15.
Thanks again for all your help.

Before the days of unleaded gas and ethanol gas 802 Randolph was probably the best you could get. It was used in everything from aircraft to chainsaws. Trouble is it cannot handle the new fuels well. Tends to get soft and leak. Been using POR 15 and having real good results.

Local radiator shop had a real nice product called Red Kote. Pour it into a cleaned tank (and then want it real clean) and roll the tank around to coat the inside. Then turn the tank upside down and let the excess run back into the can. You can reuse it if you seal the can good. Did it to my Farmall M two years ago and the stuff is holding up great. Its like unbreakable red glass now.

POR-15 is the way to go. I does not dissolve and actualy gets stronger with age. I did a B tank like yours this winter. Used tape of the pinholes and followed the directions. I used the excess and coated the outside of the tank.

There is an outfit by the name of George Hirsch (I think that's spelled correctly) that used to be advertised in Hemmings Motor News (now on the web) which served mostly the automotive restoration business. Anyways, Hirsch's sealant was reasonably priced in quart containers and was not a 2-part mix epoxy, just dump it in and swirl it around then empty it out. A lot of car restorers use it and it works very well. Maybe do a websearch for it. A real automotive restoration place would have it.

Try using JB Weld. I used it on a 9N Ford gas tank two years ago and it's still holding. It hardens up just like metal.

Tin the bottom of the tank and apply a layer of body solder.

Hi Jerry,

I did the gas tank on my AC-B last summer with Caswell 2-part epoxy. Worked nicely and was real easy to use. See link. The one pint size was more than enough even though the tank was larger than 5 gallons.

Had excellent results with the fuel tank repair kit sold by POR-15,(do a web search for POR-15), it had everything needed and was extremely user friendly. Used it on my Earthmaster and was well pleased with it.
