I know a Cummins and Power stroke, and Duramax are mean machines but for a workin man like myself are the later 6.5 diesels by Chevrolet an allright choice?I got a 97 1 ton last week and it runs good and seems to get good mileage so far.On my budget thats all I could buy for the price.I was wondering how some of you people have fared with them.Mine has a five speed and straight exaust right out of the turbo and a K&N air filter and it moves right on down the road pretty good. Thanks fellas.

I have a 94 suburban and tow a 3300 pound traval traler in AZ and find that the truck runs HOT by hot i mean 230 to 240. This is only when towing going up into the mountains also going at a rate of speed of around 40 to 45 mph in 2 gear on 8 to 10% grades. The speed is not the problum its the temp with a new factory rat i don't think this should be a problom. So if someone has a fix let me know.

Joe,

I've read the other responses and can only tell my experience. I have a 6.5 in a 1993 dually which has done alright by me. I bought it with 190K miles over 3 years ago and put on 35K so far. Had the glow plugs and controller replaced soon after purchase. Fuel filter caused a problem that I thought was injector pump but I have a reliable mechanic that changed the filter first and didn't rip me off. My only problem is the transmission doesn't like to stay in OD, so I ride with my hand on the shifter to hold it in. Like you, I'd drive a new one if they weren't so pricey.

Dunno about the older 6.5s, but I know of two instances where the Duramax engine ate the head gaskets and consequently the engine - in one case, the engine had all of 4000 miles on it. The owner was not very happy, to put it mildly. Why, oh why did they use aluminum cylinder heads on that engine?!

Can you give us the name of the dealer who worked these trucks?

We've had problems with the fuel injection pumps as well. The problem is not the engines, as you say, they are the injection pumps. Just be sure you get an injection pump that has the updates on them.

We've had good luck with these engines after fixing the problem with the fuel injection pumps. We recommend buying a fuel injection pump that has been been tested on the $120K test machines that are typically available only at the Stanadyne dealers and make sure the pumps have been updated as per all the latest factory technical service bulletins.

Well Joe, I hate to tell you this, but the only reason they're so cheap is because they were really bad engines. I don't know if you've had any expirience with the unrealiable 6.2s, but the 6.5 even has more problems. They went through injection pumps right and left and had problems with the head gaskets. That was even before they started to use turbos, which put even more stress on the engines. Chevy didn't start using Isusus (duramaxes) for nothing....

We have a '94 gmc 2500 4x4 with the 6.5 on the farm. Works pretty good, just had to replace something or another regarding the oil pressure, and had to put a new waste dump valve or something like that on it(I ain't sure exactly, I was away at school when they did it). Other than that, no problems so far. We have had it about 2 years, and tow alot with it. it's got about 110,000 miles on it, we've put about 20,000 on it. I hear the injector pumps on these are the problem area, some worse than others. Hope this doesn't happen to me or you, I hear it is about $1500 a pop to have repaired.
