I had the opportunity to go for a ride,on a Navy Hovercraft today. A friend of mine has a son-in-law who is in the Navy, stationed at Camp Pendleton Ca. He is in charge of one of the crafts. The thing just floats on top of land, or water, and maintaines a speed of 40 knots, with no problem. There is enough room on the deck to hold atleast 4 JD 5020's with no problem. That's what I did today. Tomorrow back to tractor repairs. Stan

Does that mean I'm closer to the flying car that they promissed me by the end of the 1960s?

When I worked at Rio vista Army Depot on the river rebuilding water craft and amphibious craft for the Army every once in a while the Navy would bring there Hover craft up from the bay and make runs up and down the river right in front of us. These were test vehicles and had to deck to carry anything just a cabin for passenger and big about 80 ft. long. they would do 80 knots at top speed and the noise was something else.

Wow Stan, sure sounds like fun. A lot of "WHAT? WHAT?" when someone says something? They seem pretty cool.

My son is stationed at Camp Pendleton, I visited there in April after we drove his F-150 that I lifted with a suspension and body lift cross country from Indiana. It was a special trip with my son. Did you get this ride on the base? That is really cool! Your story made my day!

They are right at the ocean. It is just down a ramp, right through the waves to the open ocean. We went about 50 miles up the coast and were about 5 mi off shore. In the 3 plus hrs we were out the craft burned about 18,000 dollars worth of fuel. stan

Wow!,Glad you shared your experience! So that thing has several engines I'd say... always liked hovercrafts...that's a big one! 5 miles off the coast, at least you could see land! I did not get over the mountain from "main side" to see the ocean on base , but he took me to the beach in Oceanside, and then to Hooters, it was my wife's idea, got the T-shirt too! My son kept us up to date on the wildfires and he helped with the horses on base as they had to be moved.
