We've been running from one family member to the next with terminal health issues who need help.

Don't get me wrong I not really complaining, I'm just glad I'm healthy enough to help.

Often folks on this forum ask about pickup trucks and how they perform.

My last trip was from my home in CO to my brother-in-laws in IL (running empty). 1001 miles from my front door to his. 434 miles 'around town'. Then back home. I set the mileage computer in my Dodge 3500 4wd diesel when I first left CO. When I returned home the average for the entire trip was 22.3 mpg. I've driven many pickup trucks in my time, but never before have I seen one as a work of art, efficient, as well as a brute when it comes to hard work.

No, I have no interest in the Chrysler Corp.

Look at your mileage computer when idling at a standstill. If it says any mileage other than "O" it is lying and cannot be trusted.

My 95 cummins 5-speed 4wd has done as good as 21mpg running around on back country roads, under 55 mph. It is in great condition and I bought it 2 years ago for 8,500. It is worth every penny. it has 210,000 on it and runs like a brand new one. It weights 6,700lbs.
Not bad in my opinion....

Oh I forgot to mention this is actual odometer reading's not the computer. Last tank was 549 miles on 26 gallons.

If the truck is a manual transmission, that is a very plausable fuel milage. Diesels often get significantly better milage than gas engines.

My dad has a '97 ram 2500 Diesel, 2wd, manual, with 195k miles. The longer the trip the better. We took it on a trip from Rochester, NY to Madison, WI (and back) a couple years ago and averaged about 24mpg for that 2000 mile trip.

There was no fancy milage calculator here either. Simply odometer miles divided by gallons used.

If you had topped off the tanks at home, then again when you got home, you would know your ACTUAL fuel milage. That is the only way to get an accurate measurement. Tom

Is that mileage based on the actual fuel you put in the tank, or what the 'puter is telling you?

Vehicle mileage 'puters have been known to CHEAT, at least a litle bit, to make the vehicle LOOK GOOD.

I agree with Bob,

If that readout says your getting 23mpg, you're probably getting a good strong 16 or 17 miles per gallon.

That fuel usage readout equates to an ornament on a Christmas tree; pretty, but therwise, more or less useless.

coflyboy, I have a Ford with the 7.3l diesel, and it gets good milage for a 7250 lb truck, but over 22 mpg in your dodge is darn good. Have you ever checked your milage computer against the fuel you put in and the odometer?

Coflyboy - We're all glad that your alright also . Our very best wishes to all your family & I'm sure all our thoughts will be with them for the best of the best . I've a mate out here in Australia who has just drive some 3000 ks from top-to-bottom of Australia & trip meter reads : 3000 ks cost $ 3000.00 in fuel alone : not including oil , 3 flat-tires , accomidation - camped out mostly , or food - shot some roo's & got some fish . W'all thought that was very expensive . Best to your rellies - very important they are , ciao form james in Auzzie-land

Modern disel pickups are a work of art. I had reason last month to drive an 04 GMC,1ton dually duramax from Indianapolis to Birmingham pulling a trailer rated for 12000lbs(not sure of what the trailer weighs)with a weight of 5000lbs on the trailer. the truck averaged 17mpg, I was impressed with the milage but more impressed with the way the truck pulled the load.

That is excellent mileage. I pull a 10,000 lb travel trailer (sorry aerodynamics) to TX in the winter and average 14.4mpg.
