By what name do you know this type of rock where you live? Here in Michigan we call them "Pudding Stones". I have been told that the trappers thought they looked like puddung with pieces of fruit in it.

Ya all are wrong...THIS is a California pumpkin. They will turn red or orange in a few years. If you cut it open it will be hollow. and after its ripe it will taste like styrafoam...sl

Cut one open with a masonry or tile saw. If solid, the conglomerate would be it. But if hollow and rather attractive, it is a geode.

Here in this part of Michigan, common name is "pudding stone." Geologists would probably call it conglomerate.

It is hard to tell from the small picture. It looks like a cemented conglomerate. There will be many different local names depending upon the location in the country.

Also being from within Michigan, depending upon the depth below surface, or if at surface, it could be a till from one of the recent glacial epochs.

Hope that this helps.

Also, you might try contacting a local or regional geological society or a natural history museum.
